Adam’s Bridge combines a striking geological formation with religious tradition in Mannar: the chain of limestone shoals lies in a shallow sea that is one to ten metres deep. Geological evidence suggests that it was once a land connection between India and Sri Lanka. Hindus revere Adam’s Bridge because of its connection with the legend of Rama. Thus, a geological interpretation and a religious tradition coexist at this site.

Island, Mainland and Routes

Mannar District covers part of Sri Lanka’s mainland as well as Mannar Island. Mannar Island is a dry, barren peninsula. The district’s landscape ranges from wooded jungle areas and rice fields to palms swaying in the wind. A causeway running across shallow water provides a direct connection between the island and the mainland. The A14 Madawachchiya–Talaimannar main road runs along a three-kilometre section of it. The regular route from Colombo to Mannar runs via Anuradhapura and Madawachchiya. Mannar Town is about 32 kilometres from Talaimannar Pier.

History, Lighthouse and Pilgrimage Tradition

Mannar Fort is located near Mannar Bridge in Mannar Town DS Division. The Portuguese built it in 1560. A later maritime landmark is Talaimannar Light House: the lighthouse is 17 metres tall and was built in 1915. It emits light signals every five seconds, visible from as far as ten nautical miles away. The fort and lighthouse therefore point to different historical milestones: the Portuguese construction of the fort in the 16th century and the lighthouse from the early 20th century.

Religious traditions are also tied to specific places. Thiruketheeswaram Temple is located near the port of Manthottam. On Mahasivarathiri, devotees from all parts of Sri Lanka walk in a “Patha Yathra” pilgrimage to this temple. This differs from the religious connection between Adam’s Bridge and the legend of Rama: there, a tradition is at the centre; here, it is a named temple and a pilgrimage practice.

Local Landmarks and Palmyra Products

Another landmark is the Baobab Tree at Pallimunai. It is about one kilometre from Mannar Bus Stand via Pallimunai Road.

When it comes to local products, the focus is on palmyra. The Madu Road Katpaham Regional Sales Outlet opened on 22 June 2026 and offers a wide selection of traditional palmyra products: palmyra jaggery, palm syrup, products made with palm flour, sweets, drinks and other processed foods. If you would like to include the outlet in your travel plans, check its current operating status before your trip.
