Four Buddha statues carved from a granite rock face form the Gal Vihara in Polonnaruwa. This monument offers a tangible way to explore the history of North Central Province. Other highlights include the rock caves of Ritigala and the seasonal elephant gathering in Minneriya National Park. Visitors exploring the region can consider cultural history, archaeological traces and wildlife as distinct themes—and choose the places that interest them most.

Successive Capital Histories

Anuradhapura was Ceylon’s political and religious capital for 1,300 years. The city was abandoned after an invasion in 993. That same year, after Anuradhapura was destroyed, Polonnaruwa became Sri Lanka’s second capital. The two sites thus represent successive historical periods. Anuradhapura tells the story of a long period as a political and religious centre; Polonnaruwa continues the story of the later capital.

Stupas and Stone Buddha Images

Individual monuments also offer distinct points of interest. The Somawathi Stupa was built in the 2nd century BCE on the banks of the Mahaweli River. The Avukana Buddha statue near Kalawewa in Anuradhapura District is an 11.36-metre-high standing figure carved from rock and set on a lotus pedestal. It is believed to have been created during the reign of King Dhatusena in the 5th century CE. In Polonnaruwa, the Gal Vihara features four Buddha statues carved out of a granite rock face. This makes it possible to distinguish between a single standing figure and a group of four rock images.

Ritigala: Monastic Traces and a Distinctive Gecko Species

Ritigala combines archaeological remains with a remarkable natural detail. In Ritigala and its surroundings, 74 rock caves with carved drip ledges, 152 inscriptions and 140 archaeological remains bear witness to an ancient Buddhist monastery where Aritta, the first Lankan “Arahath Bhikku,” lived. Ritigala Strict Natural Reserve is also home to Cnemaspis retigalensis. This day gecko species is found exclusively in Ritigala. The monastery’s history and the species’ limited distribution offer two different perspectives on the same place.

Minneriya: Seasonal Wildlife and Directions

The famous elephant gathering in Minneriya National Park is associated with the period from May to October. During the dry season, receding reservoir levels expose grass along the banks; the timing may vary depending on rainfall. More than 170 bird species have also been recorded in the park, including endemic and migratory birds. Future surveys may change these population figures. Visitors planning their trip around the elephant gathering should therefore treat the seasonal timing as a guide, not a guarantee of sightings.

The recommended route to Minneriya National Park runs from Colombo along Polonnaruwa Road towards Habarana, as far as the park headquarters in Ambagaswewa. This is 182 kilometres from Polonnaruwa. Check the route details locally before setting out so you can plan using the latest directions.

Mihintale and the Museum Visit

The Mihintale Museum (Site) is a site museum displaying antiquities from the sacred area of Mihintale. It is currently undergoing renovations, so visitor access may change. Check whether access is possible before your visit. This allows you to take the renovation into account when planning without losing sight of the museum’s historical character.
