El Saler offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay: the landscape of l'Albufera Natural Park, themed trails and buildings with very different stories. Playa de El Saler lies within the natural park, between the wetlands and l'Albufera. The dunes of the Devesa form a distinctive, protected ecosystem on the European Mediterranean coast. Those exploring the landscape will also encounter the term “mallades”: this is the name for dune formations that separate the lake from the sea. The beach, dunes and mallades thus refer to different aspects of the natural environment.
Landscape and Trails in the Dehesa
The six hiking trails in the Dehesa de El Saler are distinguished by color and each has its own theme. This gives the trails different subject matter. You can explore the Dehesa on foot or by bike to discover its vegetation and wildlife. Conditions on the routes may vary seasonally; check locally to see which individual trails are available.
Birdlife is also part of the area's natural appeal: migratory birds can be observed in l'Albufera Natural Park near El Saler. This offers a different perspective on the natural environment from the themed trails, each of which has its own focus. If you are heading to Playa de El Saler from València, it can be reached by bus routes 24 and 25. Check the current timetable before travelling.
Buildings with Different Stories
Casa Forestal de El Saler was built between 1906 and 1907 in the traditional Valencian style. It was extensively renovated and restored for use as a sociocultural space and interpretation center for the Devesa forest. Its façade features two plaques, recognized as Bien de Relevancia Local, dating from the 18th century. The construction period, intended function and older plaques each offer a distinct way of understanding this building.
Another historic building is Casa de la Demanà, also known as Casa de la Campaneta. It dates from the 18th century. Until the 20th century, auctions for hunting stands in l'Albufera were held there. The building's history is thus closely linked to an earlier use of l'Albufera; it differs considerably from the later sociocultural purpose of Casa Forestal.
The El Saler bunker is a coastal artillery battery made of reinforced concrete, built in 1938. It comprised two casemates with anti-aircraft machine guns. The complex includes an upper casemate and underground galleries; it covers an area of about 500 square meters. This military installation adds another, distinctly different function to the area's architectural history.
Another Option: Golf
El Saler Golf Course was built in 1968 by Javier Arana. The golf facility has a golf school and a practice area; program availability may change. Alongside nature and historic buildings, El Saler thus offers another option for visitors interested in golf. The different themes can help you tailor your stay to your interests, without combining landscape, history and sport into a single excursion program.
