Herbeset lies at the entrance to Tinença de Benifassà Natural Park, in a mountainous natural landscape. The hamlet has no permanent residents; some houses have been restored as summer residences. Herbeset has two rural tourism houses: Casa de la Mestra I and Casa de la Mestra II. Confirm availability before travelling. When planning, there are two distinct questions to consider: which accommodation is suitable, and which hike best fits your stay in terms of length, route type and landscape?
Village Scene and Romanesque Portal
Herbeset is considered the oldest hamlet in the municipality of Morella. From the access road, a small group of closely packed houses comes into view. At its highest point stands the Church of San Miguel; the Church of Sant Miquel is known for its Romanesque portal. The cemetery is also one of Herbeset’s sights. The few houses and the church at the highest point shape the village’s silhouette, while the portal offers a distinctive architectural feature. The village’s history can thus be explored both through its status as Morella’s oldest hamlet and through its visible settlement pattern.
Hiking: Circular Trail and Linear Route
The GR 331 Els Ports – Camà de Conquesta is a 166-kilometre circular hiking trail with 15 stages, and it includes Herbeset. Its ninth stage runs from Morella to Herbeset. It is 12.2 kilometres long, with an estimated walking time of 3 hours and 3 minutes. The 166 kilometres refers to the entire circular trail; the shorter distance applies to this particular stage. For planning a single hike, its length and estimated walking time are therefore the most directly relevant details.
The PR-CV 373 Pereroles – Herbeset is a 7-kilometre linear hiking trail with an estimated duration of 2 hours and 22 minutes. Compared with the ninth stage of the GR 331, it is shorter and has a lower estimated walking time. The route type also differs: the GR is a circular trail, while the PR-CV 373 is a linear route. This trail passes through a pine forest to the Barranc d’Herbeset, then continues to the path by the cemetery and viewpoints overlooking Herbeset.
The PR-CV 215 offers a different landscape. It passes through pine forests and ravines, as well as sections with dry-stone walls, before reaching the entrance to Herbeset. While the description of the PR-CV 373 traces the route to the ravine, past the cemetery and to viewpoints overlooking the village, the PR-CV 215 mentions ravines and dry-stone walls before reaching the entrance. Stage details may be updated; trail conditions vary seasonally. Check local conditions before setting out.
San Isidro and Traditional Pastries
A local culinary event is the San Isidro festival, which is part of Morella’s Rollos y Primas cycle. Traditional pastries take centre stage, and the CofradĂa de Herbeset distributes traditional rollos. Inclusive participation in the meal was also part of the second consecutive edition. The festival thus brings together the pastry tradition and a shared meal, offering a distinct cultural way to experience Herbeset alongside its hiking trails and historic village scene.
