Castle Views and History in the Sierra de Irta
Castillo Templario de Xivert lies on the southwestern side of the Sierra de Irta, overlooking the plain and the sea. The castle preserves clearly distinct Arab and Christian areas, including an outer Arab wall and a Templar fortress. It is recognized as a Bien de Interés Cultural. This brings together a striking connection to the landscape and the history of the Templars in one specific place.
The PR-CV 432 Castell de Xivert i Corrals circular route leads to the castle. It is 25.75 kilometers long, starts near Alcalà de Xivert, is approved by the FEDME, and follows marked roads and trails. Check trail conditions and local markings before setting out. Its length and designated destination give this route a different focus from walks around the town.
Templar History, Wells and Wayside Shrines
The Ruta Herencia del Temple is a signposted walking tour through the old town. It focuses on Templar history and includes visits to the church and the inside of the bell tower. Check opening times and booking arrangements in advance, as these may change.
The Ruta de los Pozos passes historic wells. These include the Pou Ample, dated 1627; other wells date from the 18th and 19th centuries. The Ruta de les Capelletes offers a different focus: this heritage trail passes through the town and the mountainous area, going by wayside shrines with mostly polychrome ceramic panels.
The differences can help you choose a themed walk: the Herencia del Temple focuses on Templar history and visits to religious spaces, the Ruta de los Pozos on historic wells, and the Ruta de les Capelletes on wayside shrines and ceramic panels. By contrast, the PR-CV 432 follows marked roads and trails to the castle and has a stated length of 25.75 kilometers.
Churches, Collections and Architectural History
The Iglesia Parroquial de San Juan Bautista was built between 1736 and 1766, has a Baroque-classical design, and is recognized as a Bien de Interés Cultural. Inside the church, the Museo Parroquial displays oil paintings, decorative panels, goldsmith work and historic liturgical vestments.
The Casa del Metge is a small museum recreating the former medical practice and clinic of local doctor Ricardo Cardona. It displays original furniture, medical instruments, and personal items belonging to the doctor and his family. Since visitor arrangements may change, it is advisable to check them before your visit.
The Casa de Cultura is a Renaissance building that served as a chapter house for centuries. A prison was located on the lower floor, and three pointed arches have been preserved inside. The building adds another facet of local history to the churches and collections.
Lookout, Market and Festival Traditions
The Ermita de Santa Lucía y San Benito is located in the Sierra de Irta at an altitude of 312 meters. Built in the late 17th century, it follows the Valencian Baroque style. Its lookout is considered one of the best in the entire province of Castellón.
The Alcalà de Xivert market opened in 1921 and traditionally takes place every Friday for locals and visitors. Check the date before your visit. The festivities in honor of Sant Antoni Abad traditionally take place on the weekend closest to January 17. They include a bonfire, the blessing of animals, and the distribution of Primetes; exact program details may change. Check dates and the program before traveling.
