The historic centre of La Vila Joiosa is a small, walled coastal settlement on an elevated headland facing southeast, beside the mouth of the Amadorio. The historic ensemble is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The town walls and the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción are also protected monuments; the church is a Gothic fortified church. The old town, coastline and river mouth offer different perspectives for a stay that combines architectural history and the sea.
History in the Townscape
Renaissance walls, built around 1550, line the Costera de la Mar. They replaced earlier walls that were destroyed by Barbary corsairs in 1443. The Ruta Conjunto Histórico begins beside the tower at the intersection of Plaza de la Generalitat and Costera de la Mar. Its starting panel is accessible to wheelchair users and offers large print, Braille, a tactile map, multilingual QR content and a video in Spanish Sign Language.
Roman history is also embedded in the town centre: the public baths of ancient Allon were built between AD 85 and 110 beside the forum, which is now located at Plaza de la Generalitat. Visitors interested in the town’s development can view its different historical layers side by side—from Roman structures and fortifications to the Gothic fortified church.
Coast, Beaches and Trails
The town centre has a sandy beach more than 1,300 metres long. At Basseta l’Oli, an accessible bathing service is available. Playa El Torres is different: a semi-urban pebble and sand beach surrounded by vegetation. Its beach area is 560 metres long; there is also a promenade and opportunities for diving. The Torre de Sant Josep stands on this beach and is considered the best-preserved Roman funerary monument on the Iberian Peninsula.
For a longer coastal outing, La Colada de la Costa is a specific option: the circular route between Playa del Torres and Torre del Aguiló in La Cala is about 8 kilometres long and takes around two hours. Its difficulty is considered moderate to easy. There are also six snorkelling routes at the various beaches of La Vila Joiosa. The marine environment includes fish and meadows of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica. At the Escola de Mar, people learn and practise kayaking, sailing, diving, rowing and windsurfing. The “La Vila y el mar” interpretation route explores the town’s historic relationship with the sea, fishing and the harbour.
Museums, Chocolate and Maritime History
Vilamuseu is the town museum of La Vila Joiosa and the hub of its network of museums and monuments. It is also home to the Centro de Interpretación del Pecio Bou Ferrer. The Bou Ferrer is a sunken Roman merchant ship off the coast. The Bou Ferrer project includes visits, which have been held since 2013, as well as strictly supervised diving. Check before your trip whether a visit or dive is currently available.
La Barbera dels Aragonés combines architectural history with an extensive collection of historical furnishings: the 17th-century country house was converted into a Romantic mansion in the 19th century. It contains furniture and household objects from various origins. The Chocolates Valor chocolate museum focuses on a different subject; it was recognised as the Museo Valenciano del Chocolate by the Generalitat Valenciana in 2008. It traces the development of chocolate-making using historical machinery and offers a factory tour followed by a tasting.
Festivals and Local Food Culture
The Moros y Cristianos festival of La Vila Joiosa is recognised as a Festival of International Tourist Interest. The annual festival programme takes place from 24 to 31 July. It includes El Desembarc, a staged historical landing with lights, gunpowder and festivities. If the festival dates matter for your trip, check the exact dates in advance.
For an insight into local food culture, Mercat de La Vila is a central food market and a showcase for products from La Vila Joiosa. Some stalls prepare purchased products in small portions for eating on site. In the afternoon at the harbour, you can experience the lively auction of the fish and seafood caught that day; it is best to check the specific operating details locally.
If you’re looking for a hotel in La Vila Joiosa, first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: the protected old town and museums, beaches and water activities, or the festival programme in July.
