Rodriguillo lies at an altitude of around 450 metres on the southwestern flank of Cabeço de la Sal. Exploring the area, you will encounter both a distinctive wetland and rural traditions shaped by irrigation, winegrowing and patron saint festivals.
Wetland and Biodiversity
The Humedal y saladar del Rodriguillo-Faldar is home to exceptional flora and fauna adapted to this ecosystem, including many endemic species. Reeds and rushes characterise the typical vegetation of the wetland. A municipal excursion also introduces characteristic plants such as Limonium species and tamarisks, the associated fauna, and measures to restore the area. This activity is available during a specific period and requires prior arrangements.
Another seasonal offering is the municipal programme “El Fartet y su hábitat”, scheduled to run from 15 May to 30 June. It combines talks about the species, observing it in aquariums and raising it in captivity with an excursion to the El Prado wetland. The aim is to learn about the species in its natural habitat, as well as measures to restore and rehabilitate that habitat. El Prado is one of the designated Parajes of El Rodriguillo. Check the dates and make arrangements for the activities before your trip.
Route and Road Directions
Route 8, “La montaña de sal”, is 42.6 kilometres long and runs from Villena to Cabezo de la Sal in Pinoso. It passes through El Rodriguillo and along the wetland there. The total distance therefore describes a route through several places; it should not be confused with the local stretch of road.
Along Route 8, the road runs from Pinoso via the CV-836 and then the CV-840. The wetland is beside the CV-840. If you take this road, check the road conditions before setting off. This helps distinguish the wetland’s connection to the road from the longer route.
Hermitage and Patron Saint Festivals
The hermitage of El Rodriguillo is a later building that replaced an older hermitage. According to local tradition, the older hermitage stood at a place where San Pascual BaylĂłn would stop to rest while travelling between the Franciscan monasteries of Orito in Monforte del Cid and Jumilla.
The patron saint festivals of El Rodriguillo are held in honour of San Pascual Baylón on the weekend following his feast day on the calendar, 17 May. The specific programme may vary from year to year; check the festival dates before your trip. One documented celebration included a procession through the settlement’s main streets.
Winegrowing, Irrigation and Festive Meals
The acequias of El Prado and El Rodriguillo are traditional irrigation systems and part of Pinoso’s agricultural and rural heritage. Vineyards also shape the surrounding area, supplying wine to bodegas in the town centre and in nearby Parajes. Some of these bodegas preserve older winemaking methods. Irrigation and winegrowing thus offer two distinct insights into the area’s rural culture.
The festive cuisine is also associated with a specific celebration: at a festival in 2024, traditional gachamigas were cooked over a wood fire, both soft and “ruleras”. They were eaten at a popular communal breakfast. This dated festive tradition adds a culinary aspect to the religious customs.
