The Palmeral de Elche shows how closely landscape and urban history are intertwined: the date palm groves, with their ingenious irrigation systems, were established towards the end of the 10th century as the Muslim city of Elche was founded. The Palmeral is considered a unique example of Arab agricultural practices on the European continent.
Experience the Palm Grove and Traditional Agriculture
The Ruta del Palmeral is a circular route through the palm groves. At 2,580 metres, it connects the southern groves around the historic city centre; the Huerto de San Plácido is both the starting point and the finish. At the Museo del Palmeral, visitors can access a palm grove where traditional irrigation systems and typical crops are on display. The museum also includes a municipal workshop where the traditional Palma Blanca weaving technique is demonstrated. As the workshop programme and access arrangements may change, check the visitor information before planning your visit.
At Huerto San Plácido, the visitor experience includes demonstrations of traditional work with the palms: climbing and pruning, harvesting dates, bagging the fruit clusters and manual pollination. Demonstrations are not necessarily held at every time slot, so check the programme in advance. A visit to a date farm with a tasting is also offered in the palm grove. Check availability and booking conditions before your trip.
Casa-Museo de l’Hort dels Ponts offers another glimpse into traditional everyday life. Built in 1900, the house and its garden among the palms illustrate a way of life shaped as much by irrigation channels and vegetable growing as by fruit trees. The display also includes pieces of furniture that are more than a century old.
Landmarks, Collections and the Misteri d’Elx
The Baños Árabes are among the few surviving examples of Islamic public architecture in the Comunitat Valenciana and are open to the public. The former hammam was divided into cold, warm and hot bathing areas. Its present-day design evokes the atmosphere and sounds of the past. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.
La Calahorra tells another part of the city’s history: the fortress, dating from the Almohad period, was incorporated into the defensive wall of Andalusi Elche as a watchtower in the late 12th or early 13th century. Today, it houses a permanent exhibition of paintings from the municipal collection. The works span the 17th to the 20th century. The Museo Arqueológico y de Historia de Elche focuses on the history of the local area and the communities that have lived there.
The long history of settlement can also be traced beyond the museums. The archaeological park of La Alcudia covers a ten-hectare excavation site. Various cultures inhabited the site from the 5th millennium BC to the 8th or 9th century AD; these include the important ancient city of Ilici.
The Misteri d’Elx has been performed since the mid-15th century in the Basilica of Santa Maria and on the streets of the old town. The entirely sung performance consists of two acts and takes place on 14 and 15 August. If you are unable to attend the performances, the Museo Municipal de la Fiesta offers an alternative visit dedicated to the festival. The Museo de la Virgen displays artistic and historical heritage associated with Elche’s patron saint.
A visitor programme published on 1 September 2025 describes guided tours at the Museo Escolar de Puçol through a traditional country house, former agricultural practices and the town’s shops. Pupils aged six to eleven take on the role of guides. As programme details may continue to evolve, check the latest information before your visit.
Coastal Wetlands and Birdlife
The coastal area of the municipality of Elche includes dune systems and coastal wetlands of high ecological value. They provide habitats for birds and opportunities for birdwatching. The ponds at Clot de Galvany are particularly important for the area’s birdlife and biodiversity. This coastal setting complements the cultural and historical themes of the urban area with a distinctive natural environment.
