The Huerta around Daya Nueva is shaped by irrigated agriculture, while its historical heritage ranges from the parish church to Iberian funerary architecture. This combination of landscape and culture offers different ways to shape a trip: you can explore the town’s history or combine your stay with walks through the Huerta and an excursion to the surrounding area.
Huerta, Fields and Trails
Daya Nueva is surrounded by a traditional irrigated landscape with Huerta. Its main crops include citrus fruits, artichokes and potatoes; grain fields also shape the fields and Huerta of the surrounding area. Historically, the landscape was shaped by the drainage of marshes and marginal waters. Agriculture and water management go hand in hand here, giving the Huerta its distinctive character.
An extensive network of roads and trails in the comarca’s Huerta can be explored on foot or by bicycle. Recommended routes through the Huerta include the Paraje Natural del Hondo. Access to its interior is only possible by prior appointment. There, you can see a diverse range of bird and fish life, as well as extensive irrigation infrastructure that supplies parts of the Vega Baja and Campo de Elche. If you plan to visit, arrange your appointment in advance.
Cultural History from the Parish Church to the Pilar-Estela
The present-day Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel originated as a small chapel dating from the Christian Reconquista. In 1566, this old chapel began to serve as a fully functioning parish. The Parroquia was completely destroyed in the severe earthquake of March 21, 1829, and was subsequently rebuilt. Its distinctive architectural features include a hipped roof with blue glazed tiles.
The remains of the Pilar-Estela reflect a different period. They are dated to the 5th or 4th century BC and considered the richest example of Iberian funerary architecture in the province. In June 1992, a wall about ten metres long was discovered by chance; it was part of a funerary monument known as a Pilar-Estela. Together, the parish church and the funerary monument represent very different periods in local history.
Museo La AlquerĂa and Local Culture
Museo La AlquerĂa opened to the public in 2018 and is housed in a renovated former doctor’s residence in Daya Nueva. Its collection was created through donations from residents, giving it a distinctly community-based local character. Information is available in Spanish, Valencian and English, alongside extensive images and audiovisual materials, a virtual tour, an events calendar and a selection of catalogued exhibits. This digital information may change; check the details if you are planning a visit.
The Certamen Literario Daya Nueva is a recurring cultural event. It takes place every September and marks the start of the patron saint festivities. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the exact dates for your chosen year.
Religious Architecture in Puebla de Rocamora
The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Carmen stands in Puebla de Rocamora. The Marquises of Puebla de Rocamora built it in the 18th century on a plot of about 800 square metres in the centre of the rural hamlet. Surrounded by gardens, the building has a single nave, an altar and an altarpiece. Its modest layout and setting in the hamlet provide another architectural point of reference alongside the history of the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel.
