Crevillente can be explored through very different historical periods and landscape themes: Peña Negra points to societies of the 1st millennium BC, while Canyada Joana is a Roman rural villa with a torcularium for olive oil production. Other highlights include the Islamic-influenced layout of the oldest part of town, the El Hondo wetland and trails in the Sierra de Crevillent. You can tailor your trip to your own interests, combining culture, nature and local baked goods as you wish.

Archaeology and Local History

Peña Negra is one of the most significant archaeological sites from the first half of the 1st millennium BC in the southeast and east of the Iberian Peninsula. It is important for understanding the transition from prehistoric to protohistoric societies and the origins of Iberian culture. At the Museo Arqueológico de Crevillent, local history stretches further back in time: the displays cover the period from the Upper Palaeolithic, around 30,000 years ago, through the Chalcolithic, Bronze Age, Iberian and Roman periods, and into the Islamic period.

Canyada Joana also offers a glimpse of rural life in Roman times: the villa has a torcularium for olive oil production. La Fábrica Gran was founded in 1823 and later employed more than 1,000 people. These two sites complement the archaeological traces of different periods with distinct historical themes.

The oldest part of town has preserved its original urban layout, which is distinctly influenced by Islamic design. One specific feature of this layout is Calle San Francisco, which is no more than 2 metres wide. This precise measurement makes the narrow street a tangible example of the built environment preserved in the oldest part of town.

The Moros y Cristianos tradition includes a theatrical performance set in the 13th century, staged in front of a castle backdrop erected in Plaza de la Constitución. The performance combines a historical narrative with a public setting, but this does not imply that there is an upcoming performance date.

El Hondo: Wetland and Birdwatching

El Hondo Natural Park is a protected wetland listed as a Ramsar site and designated as a ZEPA bird protection area. The natural park can be explored along paths and various boardwalks; observation towers provide opportunities to watch numerous birds. For nature enthusiasts, the focus here is on the wetland and opportunities for birdwatching.

The natural park’s information centre is within the municipality of Crevillent. It has a permanent exhibition, an audiovisual room and an adapted recreation area. These facilities offer additional ways to learn about the natural park.

Hiking, Cycling and Spending Time Outdoors

The trails and paths of the Sierra de Crevillent are used for hiking and cycling. One named hiking route is the PR-CV 109 Senda Dolça, promoted by the Centre Excursionista de Crevillent. It is 12.20 km long, with an estimated walking time of 3 hours and 50 minutes. Its certification status is listed as “Conditioned quality control”. The estimated walking time can help you plan your day; plan breaks according to your own needs.

The grounds of Parque de Montaña San Cayetano include a spring, a hostel, toilets, fountains, a viewpoint and picnic tables with permanently installed benches. As availability may change due to maintenance, check before your visit to see whether the facilities are available.

Try Local Cocas

Crevillent’s bakeries offer a range of local cocas throughout the year. Varieties include those topped with anchovies, vegetables, sardines, tuna and egg, ham, pisto and molletes. Local cuisine thus adds a specific culinary selection to the cultural and landscape themes. Before your trip, check which bakeries are an option and which varieties are available.
