Villamayor brings together Romanesque architecture, a locked castle complex and the Way of St. James amid a wine-growing landscape. Highlights for a cultural stay include the Church of San Andrés, San Esteban de Deyo Castle and the Fuente de los Moros. Cellar tours and wine tastings add wine to these themes. This lets you combine different interests when choosing your destination: architecture, history, the pilgrimage route and regional wine culture.

Romanesque Architecture at the Church and Portal

The Church of San Andrés is a Romanesque building from the 12th century, with transitions to Proto-Gothic style. Several details come together at its Romanesque portal: archivolts, a Christogram, jambs and intricately carved capitals. One of the capitals depicts a fight between two horsemen, Charlemagne and a Navarrese prince. Alongside its architectural forms, the portal therefore offers a specific visual motif that draws attention to the figures depicted.

Another Romanesque work of art is the Cross of Monjardín, a piece of goldsmithing that may date as far back as the 10th century and is associated with the first kings of Navarra. Its date therefore remains uncertain. Whether you can see the cross may depend on the church’s opening hours. The church and the cross represent different aspects of the sacred heritage: architectural forms and sculpture in one case, and a work of art that may date to the early Middle Ages in the other.

San Esteban Castle: History and Access

San Esteban de Deyo Castle, also known as MonjardĂn Castle, dates from the 10th century. It lies near Villamayor on a hill 890 meters high. The castle is locked; if you would like to visit, you can request the key at the ILARRIA bar in the town center. Since arrangements for the key may change, it is advisable to confirm availability there before your visit.

Only old sandstone walls and an old cistern in a house with a vaulted roof remain of the medieval complex. The walled grounds also contain the San Esteban Hermitage, also called Santo Cristo, which belongs to the castle of the Banu Qasu of Villamayor de MonjardĂn. The castle complex can thus be understood through its various features: its hilltop location, the surviving walls, the cistern and the hermitage.

Cistern and Wine

About 300 meters outside Villamayor de Monjardín lies the Fuente de los Moros, a cistern in the Late Romanesque style, dating to around 1200. A façade with two arches leads inside; from there, a broad staircase descends to the water. The architecture thus connects the visible entrance with the descent to the cistern. Trail conditions may vary, so it is a good idea to check them before making the detour.

Wine is also part of what the area offers: Bodega Castillo de MonjardĂn organizes cellar tours and wine tastings with food pairings at its restaurant. If you plan a tour or tasting, check the reservation details in advance, as they may change. This lets you complement a focus on architectural history with a culinary experience while keeping cultural and landscape themes in view.

The Camino de Santiago and the Landscape

Villamayor lies on the Camino de Santiago stage between Estella and Los Arcos. The Camino runs along the slopes of the Sierra de Monjardín, among vineyards, grain fields, asparagus fields and a few olive groves. The route offers spectacular views of the Sierras de Lókiz and Codés. The stage and the landscape along the slopes offer two different perspectives on the Way of St. James: the link between Estella and Los Arcos, and the succession of fields, olive groves and mountain views.

Villamayor brings together several specific interests to help you plan your trip: Romanesque architecture and sculpture, medieval castle remains, a Late Romanesque cistern, wine experiences and a connection to the Camino de Santiago. Depending on whether you want to focus on architecture, history, wine or scenery, these themes can shape your stay.
