Villafranca offers a variety of things to discover: Baroque architecture in the town, the river landscape of the Sotos de Villafranca and the protected lagoon landscape of Badina Escudera. The cultural sights highlight architectural styles and furnishings, while the river, vegetation and protected status shape the surrounding landscape.

Baroque Architecture Spanning Several Periods

The Parish Church of Santa Eufemia is one of the most significant examples of Baroque parish architecture in Navarre. Its floor plan follows a Latin cross: the nave has a single aisle, the choir is rectangular and the transept is clearly defined. The sacristy houses a small museum with Holy Week processional figures, Baroque sculptures, silverwork and historical liturgical books.

The Palacio de Bobadilla is considered an outstanding example of the Baroque style of the Ribera. Built from solid exposed brick, it dates from the late 17th or early 18th century. The Convento de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, by contrast, was built in the first half of the 18th century, but follows the characteristic model of 17th-century monastery churches. Inside is a collection of Rococo altarpieces. Archaeological remains of a Roman agricultural villa from the 2nd century date back even further.

The Accessible Baroque Route

The Baroque Route leads to eight Baroque buildings and includes QR-code panels and four tactile stations. It starts at the Ermita del Portal and is suitable for exploring on foot or by wheelchair. Its inclusive design aims to make cultural experiences accessible to everyone. At Plaza de los Fueros, the route leads to the Palacio del Conde de Rodezno. If you use a wheelchair, check the current conditions before your visit.

River Landscapes and Badina Escudera

The route through the Sotos de Villafranca is approximately twelve kilometres long. It follows the AragĂłn River through natural riverside woodlands, planted poplar groves and agricultural land, reaching the confluence of the Arga and AragĂłn rivers. This route takes in both the river and different forms of land use.

Badina Escudera in Villafranca consists of four shallow, endorheic lagoons between the AragĂłn River and the Bardenas. The area is designated a Special Area of Conservation (ZEC) and was classified as Natural Enclave EN-8 in March 1989. Reeds and rushes grow around the lagoons, while Salicornia grows in drier, more saline soils.

Festivals as a Reason to Visit

The San Pedro «Culequero» festival includes a popular processional pilgrimage to the Ermita de San Pedro. After Mass, the celebrations feature Culecas pastries, a Villafranca speciality. The exact festival date varies. If you would like to plan your trip around this tradition, check the dates in advance.

Carnival also offers its own cultural highlights, with decorated floats, a variety of groups and choreographed dances; dates and programmes may vary. Depending on the year, the Jornadas Barrocas combine food, a market, horse-drawn carriage rides, music, children's workshops, talks and guided tours exploring the town's Baroque heritage. If you are planning a trip around one of these events, it is worth checking the dates for that year's edition.

Getting There by Train

The station is in the town centre and offers passenger services with direct connections towards Alsasua and CastejĂłn. Timetables and connections may change, so check the details before travelling.
