In Urroz, cultural history and a challenging cycling option go hand in hand: in the centre of Urroz-Villa, Gothic houses with coat-of-arms-adorned doorframes have been preserved, and the Vuelta a Itzaga circular route starts there. Urroz offers two distinct highlights to help you plan your trip.

Historic Buildings and Art

Urroz-Villa was surrounded by walls until 1516, when their demolition was ordered. This year marks a turning point in the town’s history. Gothic houses with coat-of-arms-adorned doorframes have been preserved in the centre. Casa Bastida is a palace house with a well-preserved façade, while the Torreblanca Palace is listed as a “palacio cabo de armería”. These examples draw attention to different forms of built heritage: the former fortifications, ornate doorframes and distinctive palace buildings. The date and architectural features offer several points of reference for understanding the town’s history.

Sacred art can also be understood through precise dates. The church of La Asunción has a Renaissance high altarpiece by Miguel de Espinal, dating from 1570, which is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The Crucero de San Blas, by contrast, is a Late Gothic sculpture from the late 15th or early 16th century; it marks the end of Urroz-Villa in the direction of Pamplona. The comparison takes you from a Late Gothic work to a dated Renaissance altarpiece, making the different periods tangible.

Plaza del Ferial and Events

Plaza del Ferial covers 7,540 m² and is the venue for the San Martín Fair. The square also has a covered pelota court dating from 1813. Its size, connection with the fair and pelota court offer different points of reference: the figure describes the square’s area, while the court is a dated architectural feature. If you would like to plan your stay around the San Martín Fair, check the date and programme in advance; both may vary.

The Feria de ArtesanĂa de Urroz-Villa is a separate event: it brings together more than 100 stalls run by craft workers and agri-food producers. Dates and programmes for this event may also vary. If you plan to visit for the crafts or agri-food products, check the current event schedule before setting your travel dates.

The Ermita de San Pedro adds a more recent example of community work to the town’s history: local residents restored it in the late 1980s and early 1990s as part of an Auzolan. During the summer months, the ermita serves as a place of prayer at least one day a week. If you would like to include this seasonal use in your plans, check before your visit whether it applies during your travel dates.

Historic Railway and Gravel Ride

The Tren del Irati had a stop in Urroz-Villa. The historic railway ran between Pamplona and Sangüesa from 1911 to 1955; the stop is therefore part of the region’s transport history. These dates identify the line as a historic railway and should be distinguished from present-day travel planning.

The Vuelta a Itzaga offers a different perspective. The circular route starts in Urroz-Villa and is 81.82 km long. It is designated for gravel cycling, rated challenging and has 1,306 m of elevation gain. Its length, elevation gain and difficulty rating provide concrete ways to judge whether the ride fits your travel plans. Check route conditions before setting off.
