Sesma brings together a variety of themes for a trip: early Gothic sacred architecture, the distinctive history of esparto craftsmanship, local festivals and a circular route through the Monte Ayuso landscape. You can focus your stay on local history, festival culture or a hike.

Churches, Hermitage and Craftsmanship

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción dates back to an early Gothic building from the beginning of the 13th century. Its main altarpiece was commissioned in 1625. The building and the altarpiece represent different periods in the church’s history: the early core of the building on the one hand, and the later commission for the main altarpiece on the other. If you are interested in architecture and sacred art, these two dates offer a tangible way to explore local history.

The hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Almuza is an early Gothic building from around 1200 and is now in ruins. An archaeological site containing materials dating back to the Bronze Age was also discovered on the hill where it stands. Different historical layers therefore lie side by side here: Bronze Age archaeological traces and the medieval building history of the hermitage.

Traditional esparto craftsmanship is another aspect of local history. Sesma was the only place in the Merindad de Estella known for this craft. The traditional work involved gathering albardín grass, crushing and twisting the fibres into ropes, and making mats, carrying baskets, saddle bags, sacks and agricultural ropes. The range of products thus extended from ropes to a variety of everyday and carrying items.

Landscape and Monte Ayuso Circular Route

The landscape around Sesma consists mainly of gypsum and clay. Erosion has created separate ridges and valleys, with Peña Ezquerra standing out among them. Several streams cross the area, forming ravines that remain dry for most of the year. However, they can carry rushing water during storms. The landscape therefore features both striking landforms and a clear contrast between mostly dry ravines and potential watercourses during storms.

The Monte Ayuso circular route starts in Sesma and follows the heights of Monte Ayuso. It is 14.30 km long, with an elevation gain of 110 m. The route offers views of the extensive, steppe-like plains of the Ribera of Navarre. The distance and elevation gain provide practical points of reference for planning, while the views of the plains add a distinctive landscape highlight. Check local conditions before setting out on a hike.

Festivals and Community Traditions

Sesma’s patron saint festivals begin in late August and last seven days; the exact dates vary. They include the Pochada de Sesma, a communal meal on Calle de la Iglesia. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival period, check the specific dates and event details in advance.

Carnival celebrations include a fancy-dress gathering for children, a chocolate party for all the children and the burning of Judas. The Feria de Artesparto may take place on the last Sunday in April or on 1 May; the exact date can vary. These different dates offer a chance to plan your trip around either a celebration or the circular route and historic sites.
