Doneztebe-Santesteban can be explored through two distinct themes: Laxoa is played here, and several cycling routes start in Doneztebe or connect to it. On the Vía Verde del Bidasoa, two tunnels and dense forest lead through a section where remnants of the former railway line can also be seen at its starting point. When planning, it is helpful to first choose your focus: cycling routes, the pelota tradition and historic architecture reveal different sides of the town.

Cycling routes of different lengths

The 3.5-kilometre section of the Vía Verde del Bidasoa runs between Doneztebe-Santesteban and Sunbilla and connects to EuroVelo 1. In Doneztebe, the Vía Verde begins at Parque Intzakardi, where remnants of the former railway line can be seen. The Ederbidea cycling route, also known as EuroVelo 1, also begins in Doneztebe-Santesteban and connects there with the Vía Verde del Bidasoa. Parque Intzakardi is also home to notable plane trees and various local tree species.

The Camino del agua/Uraren Bidea is 15.76 kilometres long. It begins at Merkatu Plaza in Santesteban and follows the course of the Ezkurra River. The route is suitable for mountain bikes, but is considered challenging; stone bridges are among its features. The stated lengths describe different things: 3.5 kilometres refers to a section of the Vía Verde, while 15.76 kilometres is the stated length of the Camino del agua/Uraren Bidea. This is a useful comparison before adding a route to your plans.

Along the Camino, the route leads to a seasonal waterfall and past marked remains of baryte mines that were in operation until 1976. The route can be slippery when it rains, and weather can affect its difficulty and surface conditions. Keep this in mind when choosing a route. For the Vía Verde, check the official condition reports before setting off.

Laxoa and local architectural history

Laxoa is played at the Frontón Bear-Zana in Doneztebe-Santesteban, which has two frontons. The “Juego de laxoa,” also known as “Guante,” has been recognised in Navarre as an intangible cultural asset of special interest since 8 May 2019. Plaza Bear-Zana was built in 1855 and is also used for Laxoa games. Laxoa is described as the oldest variant of pelota. If you would like to watch a game, check the dates in advance, as schedules may vary.

The Iglesia de San Pedro was built and extended over several periods, particularly in the 16th and 18th centuries. Its tower is believed to have originated as a tower of the former castle of the Lords of Lerín and retains arrow slits and cannon openings. Inside are Baroque altarpieces and a 1887 organ by Cavallie Coll in the Rococo style. The year 1887 places the organ well after the church’s particularly notable construction phases.

Two residential buildings also showcase distinct historical styles. The Casa-Palacio on Calle Intzakardi dates from the 18th century and bears the coats of arms of Bertiz and Ezpeleta. The Casa gótica de la calle Mercaderes is a Gothic tower house from the late 15th century and is considered the best preserved in its original condition. Its pointed-arch portal has eleven voussoirs; on the first floor are two tracery windows with ogee arches. These specific architectural features make the difference between the late Gothic tower house and the Casa-Palacio easy to see.

Festivals and practical information

The Doneztebe-Santesteban carnival follows the pre-Easter calendar. A youth group performs as a Comparsa and, dressed in costume, visits farmsteads and neighbourhoods on the Thursday and Friday before Ash Wednesday; a parade takes place on Saturday afternoon. The autumn fair is usually held on the second or third Friday in November, around St Martin’s Day. It focuses on livestock and regional crafts, which you can see and buy there.

Santa Luzia takes place on 13 December. The festivities include crafts stalls outside the church, talos and a fairground atmosphere. If you are planning your trip around one of these festivals, check the exact dates or current programme. This helps you distinguish annual events from visits focused more on cycling routes or architectural history.

The Doneztebe-Santesteban Tourist Office is located on Carretera del Mercado in the former bus station. It is open during the summer season and Holy Week. Check the seasonal opening hours before your visit.
