In Burguete (Auritz), the Camino de Santiago passes through the town center, which is protected as a historic site. The town’s history is also closely connected with the route: Burguete developed to provide for pilgrims arriving from Europe across the Pyrenees. This historic connection provides a common thread for discovering the town, alongside its buildings, archaeological traces and the many ways to experience the Pyrenean landscape.

Townscape and Architectural History

The Church of San Nicolás de Bari brings together several periods of construction: its origins date back to the Middle Ages, while its classical-Baroque ashlar-stone portal front dates from 1699. Ashlar masonry consists of dressed stones laid in regular courses. The building therefore reveals both medieval origins and a portal design created much later.

The surviving Pyrenean houses also shape the impression of Auritz-Burguete’s architectural history. Their hipped roofs have pitches of up to 60 degrees, a design suited to dealing with snow. The municipal cemetery offers a distinctive contrast: Miguel Gortari designed it in 1964. It received a nationwide award for its beauty and innovative design.

Puente Arrobi is a small medieval bridge with a single arch over the Urrobi River. Other traces reach further back in time: the archaeological site of Zaldua contains remains of the Roman road from Astorga to Bordeaux. The municipality of Burguete is also home to Neolithic dolmens, including the Dolmen of Lindus. These archaeological remains date from different periods; the dolmen is located within the municipality and should not automatically be associated with the town center.

Hikes and Trails

The routes described offer hikers a range of themes and itineraries. The fourth stage of the GR Urkiaga–Auritz/Burguete is an 18-kilometer hike through Auritz/Burguete; the route reference points to the 2024 GR-11 guide. Another option is the Ruta de los Búnkeres de Burguete. It follows the Pyrenean border area and takes three marked trails past the remains of a defensive line whose planning dates back to the Spanish Civil War. Check trail conditions before setting out.

The Valles de Arce y Aezkoa route starts in the north, in Burguete, and descends to Palacio de Arce. The options described therefore differ in more than just their names: the GR stage has a specified length, the bunker route is characterized by its three marked trails and historical theme, and the Valles de Arce y Aezkoa route by its starting point, direction and destination. You should also check conditions before setting out on this route.

Another activity is a guided ride with Irati E-bike on electric mountain bikes; bike rental is included, and rides can start in Auritz/Burguete. If you would rather focus on learning about nature than going for a ride, the Parque MicolĂłgico Erro-Roncesvalles offers a different kind of experience: its program includes guided nature visits where experts share their knowledge of mycology. Dates and booking conditions may vary.

Nature and Migratory Birds

Collado de Lindus is considered one of Europe’s most important migration bottlenecks for birds. This nature-focused attraction adds another way to experience the Pyrenees to Burguete’s cultural and historical highlights: the focus here is on bird migration, while the guided visits at Parque Micológico Erro-Roncesvalles are devoted to mycology. The two offerings have different focuses and need not be considered part of the same excursion.
