Berrioplano/Berriobeiti lies on the banks of the Juslapeña River; historical records about the town date back to the 13th century. When planning your trip, you can choose to focus on nature trails or cultural history. A municipal guide brings together five nature walks, and the Iglesia de la Purificación de Nuestra Señora offers a vivid example of the town’s architecture.

Nature trails and connections

The five walking routes form a network that extends across almost the entire Cendea de Berrioplano. The San Cristóbal route is described as a trail of high ecological value. It connects Artica, Berriozar, Berriosuso, Berrioplano and Aizoain. The network highlights the breadth of the walking options, while the places named along San Cristóbal provide specific points of reference.

Another route to consider is the Plazaola Greenway: a 9.65-kilometre section runs through Berrioplano and opened in April 2024. In April 2024, the Plazaola Greenway was intended as a transport connection for public use. Check the current conditions before your trip. For road access, the N-240 is a useful reference: Berrioplano is connected by the national road that runs between Pamplona and Donostia/San Sebastián.

Romanesque floor plan and later art

The Iglesia de la Purificación de Nuestra Señora has a Romanesque floor plan dating from the late 12th century. Its rectangular, single-nave body is about 17 metres long and 6.15 metres wide. Three unequal sections divide the interior, ending in a semicircular apse. These measurements make the proportions of the floor plan tangible and provide a specific architectural context for the church.

A portico with two pointed arches opens on the south side. The main altarpiece was created by Domingo de Lusa and Martín de Echeverría for the year 1629. The floor plan, portico and altarpiece draw attention to different features of the same church: its Romanesque layout, the design of its entrance and a later work of sacred art.

Festivals and culinary tradition

Two recurring dates offer a seasonal reference point for your plans. On 15 May, Berrioplano celebrates its patron saint’s festival in honour of San Isidro. On 1 November, the Castañé tradition takes place, featuring a tasting of roasted chestnuts. The dates offer different experiences: a festival honouring the patron saint in May and a chestnut tasting in November. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the annual programme in advance.

Plan your stay

Those especially interested in the church’s architecture will find several specific features in the details about its floor plan, portico and altarpiece, while the walking routes and their connections offer other points of interest. Search for a hotel in Berrioplano that suits the purpose of your trip, and check the event calendar if you plan to visit for San Isidro or the Castañé.
