In Atondo, sacred art, historic buildings and hiking trails meet a striking highland landscape. Cultural highlights include the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Osquía and the Church of San Martín de Tours; the GR 220 long-distance trail passes through the village and continues to Bizkai. This offers a glimpse of two different sides of Atondo: its religious art history and the trails in the northern part of the village.

Highland Landscape and Trails

The GR 220 section near Atondo starts in the village center, climbs to the upper edge of the village and continues onto the trails of the Sierra. A 70-meter detour branches off the route to the west and leads to the summit. The 70 meters refers to this detour, not the length of the entire hiking trail. Check the route conditions before setting out.

Atondo’s northern area slopes down from the limestone ridge of Bizkai to the road from Pamplona to Oskía at the village. At Santa Cruz, the ridge reaches 825 meters, while the road by the village lies at 525 meters. The two elevations differ by 300 meters, bringing the landscape’s change in elevation into focus. The long-distance trail and these elevation points describe different aspects: the route description gives the trail’s course through the village and up to the Sierra trails, while the elevations locate the northern area.

Hermitage, Church and Sacred Art

The Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Osquía is located in Atondo beside the road and was built in 1570. A Renaissance depiction of the Virgin of Osquía from the 16th century is venerated there. If you plan to visit the hermitage, check local access conditions in advance.

The Church of San Martín de Tours is a rural stone building that was rebuilt in the modern era. The outline of the walls and the 16th-century bell tower have been preserved. The altarpiece depicts Saint Martin sharing his cloak with a poor man. The church also houses a Romanist polychrome sculpture of the Virgin and Child from around 1600. It comes from the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Osquía. The sculpture and the Renaissance depiction venerated in the hermitage are distinct works of art, each with its own origin and date.

A House with a Coat of Arms in the Upper Part of the Village

The Palacio de Zamarguinarenas is also part of Atondo’s historic architecture. The house with a coat of arms stands in the upper part of the village and has a pointed-arch portal decorated with cabochons. Alongside the religious buildings, this secular building and its elaborately designed entrance reflect the village’s architectural diversity.

Fiestas and Pilgrimage

The municipal website provides information from 2016: the Fiestas de Atondo in honor of the Assumption of Mary are listed for August 14 and 15. Check the program for the relevant year before traveling. A 2022 article describes the start of the procession for the pilgrimage to Osquía at San Martín de Atondo on the Sunday closest to May 15. During the pilgrimage, pilgrims stop for a rest at Alto de Artiza, between Ochovi and Atondo. Confirm the date and arrangements locally when planning for a specific year.

The two religious occasions have different dates: the 2016 municipal information lists August 14 and 15 for the Fiestas, while the start of the procession described in 2022 is tied to the Sunday near May 15. If you are planning a trip around either date, you can check the relevant details in advance: the August festival program or the annual arrangements for the May pilgrimage.
