The Bardenas Reales border Arguedas to the west. Here, nature experiences and local history stand side by side: the natural park and its birdlife offer a different focus from the town’s historic buildings and festivals. When planning your visit, it is worth exploring these different sides of Arguedas separately.

Bardenas Reales and Birdwatching

The Bardenas Reales is a natural park and biosphere reserve in southeastern Navarre, in the center of the Ebro Basin depression. One of the main entrances to the natural park is next to the village of Arguedas. Check local access conditions before setting out.

In the rice-field landscape, the EstaciĂłn BiolĂłgica de Arguedas has a birdwatching point. Optical equipment and advice from specialist staff are available there. Check the arrangements for visits in advance. A Bardenas Reales visitor information center is located at Finca de los Aguilares near Arguedas. It offers maps and advice on exploring the Bardenas, as well as a small archaeological exhibition, a diorama, reproductions of typical birds and toilets. Check opening arrangements before your visit.

Architecture, History and Views

The present-day Iglesia de San Esteban was built by Joan de Ancheta in 1560. The large, tall building is in the style of the Catholic Monarchs, a transitional form between Gothic and Renaissance. The Ermita de San Miguel also tells the story of the town’s architectural history: it is the oldest surviving religious building in Arguedas. The former hermitage is now a cultural space called “La Capilla.”

The Balconico de los Moros offers a different perspective on Arguedas: it is a natural balcony on the rock above the Iglesia de San Esteban. From there, you can see Arguedas, the church, the landscape and Moncayo. The path leads behind the town center via Calle “La Concha” and is steep but well marked. The Cuevas de Arguedas add another dimension to the town’s history: at the end of the 19th century, they were dug into the hillside as homes for residents with lower incomes. Their origins and use are therefore markedly different from the town’s religious buildings.

Leisure and Festivals

Sendaviva in Arguedas combines attractions, nature and shows. It offers around 30 family-friendly attractions and more than 800 animals from 200 species. As the park’s offerings may change, check what is currently available before making plans. The recreation area next to the Ermita de la Virgen del Yugo has swings, barbecue areas and viewpoints overlooking the Bardenas Reales.

The festivals also give your visit a seasonal focal point. Arguedas’s patron saint festivities are dedicated to San Esteban, begin on the first Sunday in August and last nine days. Check the dates and program in advance. Carnival celebrations include costume gatherings, parades, competitions for the most original costumes and musical processions through the town.

Accommodation and Planning Your Stay

For travelers with a motorhome, the municipal motorhome area in Arguedas is a separate overnight option. It offers drinking water, gray water and chemical toilet disposal, as well as Wi-Fi. As the services offered may change, check the current conditions before your trip. This allows you to plan your overnight stay to suit your preferred way of traveling, while birdwatching, local history and the view from the Balconico offer different ways to spend your time in Arguedas.
