In Parque de Navarra, there is a recreation area in the centre of Aoiz, overlooking the Irati River and next to a Romanesque bridge. The town’s attractions range from its historic streetscape to hiking trails and its railway history. You can plan your stay around whether you’re most interested in discovering architecture and history or spending time on the surrounding trails.

Old Town, Architecture and Local History

The Old Town brings together Gothic and modern civic architecture. Stone houses feature pointed or round-arched doorways, wooden eaves and coats of arms. The Casa Palacio de Argamasilla was built in the Renaissance style at the end of the 15th century and is considered one of the finest examples of Navarrese civic architecture. The Iglesia de San Miguel reveals a different architectural history: built from the 15th century onwards over an earlier Romanesque church, it retains the robust structure of its tower.

The Fuente Grande, also known as the Fuente de las Eras, is another landmark. Dating from 1801, the fountain is Neoclassical in style, and its coat of arms refers to Aoiz. The medieval Bidelepu Bridge crosses the Irati with four arches. Together with the varied house façades, it offers a glimpse of different periods of architectural history, without any single style defining the town.

Three kilometres from Aoiz, the small Ermita de San Román stands along the local Camino de Guenduláin. The peace treaty between the Agramonteses and Beaumonteses was signed there in 1479. The event is linked to the creation of Aoiz’s coat of arms. The site thus connects a specific historical event with a destination outside the town centre.

Hiking Trails with Different Levels of Challenge

The linear Ermita de San Román–Río Irati hiking route in Aoiz is 6.6 kilometres long and rated easy. It passes through a pine forest to the Nevera de Aoiz. In this historic ice house, winter snow was compacted into ice to preserve food. The route pairs a clearly specified hiking distance with a glimpse of an earlier way of storing provisions. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

An easy version of the Rala trail leads to the Quejigo de Rala, a Portuguese oak (Quercus faginea) designated as Natural Monument MN-6. The Sierra de Artxuba/Zarikieta route is listed as 18 kilometres long, with 482 metres of elevation gain. These figures offer a clear comparison: the San Román–Río Irati route is shorter and linear, while the Sierra route also specifies an elevation gain. Check trail conditions before this hike, too.

Other trails lead to a variety of landscapes and cultural experiences. The route to the Ermita de San Lorenzo offers views of the Aoiz area, the Sierra de Zariquieta and the Itoiz Reservoir. A local trail leads to the Induriaga necropolis and offers a panorama of the reservoir. From the viewpoint by the Irati River, you can also see the former Ekai sawmill: a group of industrial buildings dating from the early 20th century.

Exhibitions and Regional Connections

The permanent exhibition “Historias de Aoiz” at the cultural centre uses a detailed model to show what Aoiz looked like in 1929. A municipal publication from 2022 lists it as a permanent exhibition. Publications from 2022 also describe the “El Irati, S.A.” exhibition as a permanent cultural and historical attraction and a historical landmark of the town. Check current opening hours before visiting.

Beyond Aoiz, the 56.6-kilometre Camino Natural del Irati runs from Sangüesa/Zangoza through Liédena, Lumbier, Urraúl Bajo, Lónguida, Aoiz/Agoitz, Urroz-Villa and Lizoain-Arriasgoiti to Valle de Egüés/Eguesibar. For orientation, it is important to distinguish this route from the former El-Irati electric railway: the railway between Pamplona/Iruña and Sangüesa/Zangoza carried company products and also served passenger traffic. A project document dated 26 October 2024 proposed restoring its former railway line as a cycling path; the second section was to pass through Lónguida, Aoiz and Urraúl Bajo.

This makes it easy to choose destinations that suit you, without combining hikes and sightseeing into a fixed itinerary.
