Griñón offers several distinct points of interest for a cultural stay: Baroque and Renaissance art, heritage history, the Plaza Mayor and two festivals with different connections to the town. You can choose your focus based on whether you want to include religious artworks, the historical context of buildings, the design of the square or an event date in your trip. The range of local themes extends from religious artworks and building preservation to agricultural history and a specific bus connection.

Art and heritage history

The Iglesia Parroquial de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora has a splendid, unpolychromed Baroque altarpiece. An altarpiece is a decorative structure behind the altar; “unpolychromed” describes a finish without multiple colours. The church is classified as a monument in Griñón, and the procedure to grant it protected status has been initiated. This building therefore brings together its specific furnishings and its heritage classification.

The Monasterio de la Anunciación de las M.M. Clarisas offers another art-historical perspective: it has a Renaissance altarpiece by Juan Correa Vivar. Comparing it with the Baroque altarpiece in the parish church reveals two different art-historical periods. The artist is named for the Renaissance work, while the unpolychromed finish is a distinctive feature of the Baroque work. By contrast, the founding history takes centre stage at the Convento de La Encarnación de Griñón. It was founded in 1523 by Don Rodrigo de Vivar, a canon from Zamora, and is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the Monument category. The founding year and BIC category answer different questions: when the convent was founded and how it is classified for heritage purposes. The buildings also differ in their protection status: the convent is protected as a BIC in the Monument category. The parish church is classified as a monument, and the procedure to grant it protected status has been initiated.

Plaza Mayor and townscape

The Plaza Mayor provides a different design accent. Its paving consists of various mosaics, and figures of notable local personalities decorate the square. Visitors who want to consider the design of the square as a distinct focus alongside sacred art will find a clear contrast here. The Plaza’s design thus complements the view of the altarpieces in the churches and convents.

Festivals and when to visit

The Fiesta de “La Coliflor” takes place in March and has commemorated Griñón’s agricultural past every year since the 1980s. If you want to combine your trip with this occasion, use March as a guide and check the specific dates for the year in question. Another event to consider is La Representación del Cristo Aparecido, which has been designated a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Regional. When planning your trip, two different features come to the fore: the March date of the Fiesta de la Coliflor and the regional tourism designation of the Representación.
