Poio brings together the history of its monastery and villages with landscapes and opportunities for observing nature. The Monastery of San Xoán de Poio and Combarro represent architectural heritage; A Caeira adds prehistoric rock carvings, while Tambo can only be reached as part of an organised visit. The viewpoint on Monte Castrove, the Bosque de Colón and the “Entre ríos y molinos” circular route each offer something different, too. When choosing where to stay, you can first consider whether architecture, history, nature observation or views matter most to you.

The Monastery and Combarro’s Villagescape

The Monastery of San Xoán de Poio was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1971. Its granary is 123 metres long and is among the largest examples of its kind in Galicia. The monument designation and the granary’s exceptional length highlight different aspects: here, monastic history meets a striking example of traditional architecture.

Combarro adds a distinctive village setting to this focus. The fishing village is among the Galician places with the best-preserved traditional architecture and was declared a historic-artistic ensemble in 1972. About 60 hórreos have been preserved; half of them stand along the coast. There are also seven stone crosses, known as cruceiros, built between the 18th and 20th centuries. While the large granary stands out at the monastery, Combarro’s cultural points of interest are spread among its hórreos and crosses.

Rock Carvings and Museum

The A Caeira Archaeological Site offers a different perspective on the area’s history: it includes eight granite rocks with Bronze Age carvings dating back about 4,000 years. This makes prehistoric rock art a distinct theme to consider alongside the buildings of the monastery and Combarro when planning your visit.

The Casa Museo de Colón displays a scale replica of the nautical chart drawn by Juan de La Cosa in 1500. It measures 93 × 183 centimetres. The museum also presents various hypotheses about Christopher Columbus’s Galician origins. In this way, it combines a specific chart exhibit with discussion of these questions of origin.

Tambo: Guided Visits and Nature Observation

Visits to Tambo follow clear requirements: group sizes are limited, a guided tour is required, and access is only possible via the pier. You need an access permit and a ticket for an organised boat trip departing from Combarro harbour. The visit lasts about 2.5 to 3 hours and covers approximately 2 kilometres. If you plan to visit Tambo, check the dates of the organised boat trips and the permit and ticket requirements in advance.

The island brings together opportunities to explore nature and history. Tambo is a good place to observe seabirds, including cormorants, grey herons and kingfishers. Visible traces of the past include the ruins of a lazaretto and the Church of San Miguel with its spring. The guided visit therefore offers specific historical points of interest alongside nature observation.

Views, Tree Planting and Mills

The viewpoint on Monte Castrove is 613 metres above sea level. From there, you can see Pontevedra, Marín, Tambo Island, the entire northern coast of the Ría de Pontevedra and Ons Island. If your main interest is taking in the landscape, this offers a different focus from the historic buildings or a guided island visit.

A planting of 500 California coast redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) was established in the Bosque de Colón in 1992. The “Entre ríos y molinos” circular route passes nine mills, seven of which have been restored. Together with the viewpoint, the tree planting and mill route broaden the cultural themes with two different connections to nature and landscape: a dated tree planting and a route alongside mills.

Road Access and Choosing a Hotel

The PO-308 runs through Poio. It begins in Ponte da Barca (Pontevedra) and continues towards Sanxenxo, O Grove and A Toxa. If you are looking for a hotel in Poio, you can compare your interests with the specific location of each option. If you plan to visit Tambo, also include the organised boat trip from Combarro harbour in your plans.
