Vimianzo offers different ways to explore history and landscape: from Castelo de Vimianzo to live craft demonstrations, megalithic sites and a rocky landscape. When planning your trip, it helps to choose a focus. Are you most interested in the castle and festival culture, individual archaeological remains, or a landscape to explore on foot?

The Castle, Its History and Craftsmanship

Construction of Castelo de Vimianzo began in the 13th century, and it was remodelled in the 14th and 15th centuries. The complex includes walls and a moat; a bridge crosses the moat, which was once a drawbridge. The construction period and later alterations give the castle several historical phases, while its walls and moat are tangible architectural features. Those interested in its architectural history can consider both, rather than reducing the complex to a single date of origin.

The castle was restored for public use and is managed by Vimianzo Town Council. For a specific visit, it is worth checking the current opening hours. Live craft demonstrations offer another perspective: as part of the Muestra de ArtesanĂa al Vivo, various artisans work live with Vimianzo lace, linen, pottery, basketry, straw weaving, ship models and glass jewellery. Since the specific schedules may vary, check in advance when the demonstrations take place.

Asalto ao Castelo: Theatre and Festive Week

Asalto ao Castelo takes place on the night of the first Saturday in July; the exact festival date may change. The theatrical performance actively involves the audience and is inspired by the Great Irmandiño Revolt, which began across Galicia in 1467. The festival thus combines a historical connection with a performance in which the audience takes part. If you visit Vimianzo around this event, check the dates for that year.

Throughout the festive week, various local food establishments serve tapas known as “Pinchos irmandiños.” Inspired by medieval cuisine, they must not contain ingredients introduced after the discovery of the Americas. The food is available during the festive week, so this timing is just as relevant to planning as the performance itself.

Megalith Route and a Single Monument

The Ruta de los DĂłlmenes de Vimianzo is a circular route that can be travelled by car or bicycle. It connects nine megalithic sites of varying character. This offers a different way to explore the area than visiting a single monument: the focus is on several examples along a circular route. The listed modes of transport and the number of sites it connects help you understand what kind of excursion it is, without conflating the route with a single archaeological site.

Arca do RabĂłs is a single monument with its own archaeological context. It forms part of the Chan do RabĂłs and Chan do Cabral megalithic necropolis, one of the largest megalithic necropolises on the Costa da Morte. Arca do RabĂłs is a large megalithic monument; part of its burial mound, around 20 metres in diameter and 1.5 metres high, remains. These approximate measurements give a concrete sense of the surviving part, while its inclusion in the necropolis provides the wider archaeological context.

Rocky Landscape and Further Archaeological Perspectives

Penedos de Pasarela e Traba is a destination for those interested in the landscape. The area extends across the municipalities of Laxe and Vimianzo on the Costa da Morte. Four peaks surround the Traba valley, reaching up to 274 metres in height. Penedos de Pasarela e Traba can be climbed on foot from Pasarela, in the parish of Calo. The area’s reach across two municipalities, its connection to the valley and the possibility of a climb are all different aspects to consider when visiting the landscape.

Castro das Barreiras is also a cultural and tourist attraction in Vimianzo. Alongside the castle, the megalithic sites and Penedos de Pasarela e Traba, it adds another archaeological point of interest. Each place appeals to different interests: architectural history and crafts at the castle, megalithic monuments and a circular route, and a rocky landscape with peaks surrounding the Traba valley.
