Petroglyphs by the Angueira

The petroglyph site by the Angueira River lies south of the village of Cornide, on a hill opposite the river. It is also known as the Monte de Cornide petroglyph site. The site is signposted and forms part of the PR-G 238, the Teo Petroglyph Route; the archaeological destination and circular route are linked here.

The site includes several circular designs. One motif, with a diameter of about 55 cm, is particularly visible. This measurement refers to that individual motif, not to the entire site. This distinguishes the size of the prominent symbol from the extent of the archaeological site.

Late afternoon is recommended for visiting the petroglyph site, as the more eroded designs are easier to make out in the sunlight at that time. The recommended time of day is therefore linked to viewing the motifs. If the rock carvings are the main focus of your visit, you can take this advice into account when planning.

The Teo Petroglyph Route

The PR-G 238, the Teo Petroglyph Route, is an 11.87 km circular route of moderate difficulty. It starts at the Capela dos Milagres in Cornide and offers views of the Ulla Valley and the silhouette of Pico Sacro. Alongside the archaeological destination, these two named landscapes are also features of the tour. The distance, difficulty level and circular layout offer different points of reference when choosing a route.

“A beira do Angueira” is a shorter circular option on the Teo Petroglyph Route. It combines archaeological impressions with the banks of the Angueira River. Compared with the PR-G 238, it focuses more on combining archaeology with the riverbank; the longer loop is characterized differently by its distance, moderate difficulty and the views mentioned.

A nighttime event from 2026

The 13th Teo Nighttime Petroglyph Routes were organized in 2026 in collaboration with the Colectivo A Rula. The meeting point for the “A beira do Angueira” route was at the Capela dos Milagres de Cornide. This event links the name of the shorter route with a specific meeting point in Cornide.

The nighttime walk at the time was about 3 km long and lasted 2 to 3 hours; bringing a flashlight was recommended. These details apply to the 2026 event, not as a general duration estimate for every walk on the shorter option. This keeps the timeframe for the earlier event separate from the general route description.

Plan your route and time of visit

When planning, you can consider two questions separately: when would you like to view the petroglyphs, and which route suits your priorities? Late afternoon is recommended for viewing the more eroded designs. When choosing a route, you can opt for the moderately difficult 11.87 km circular route, with views of the Ulla Valley and Pico Sacro, or the shorter circular option, with its archaeological impressions along the Angueira River. The approximately 3 km distance and 2 to 3 hours apply exclusively to the nighttime walk in the 2026 program.
