Serra de Outes combines a historic trace of the Way of St. James with riverside paths and a named route to waterfalls and cultural points of interest. These offer different focuses when planning your trip: its history includes a chapel that was once a stopping point; the route to San Paio connects natural and cultural points of interest; and the Tins estuary is the focus of the riverside path. Karting is another activity in its own right. You can make your choice according to whether you are most interested in historical connections, a hiking or cycling route, river scenery or karting.

Historic trace of the Way of St. James

A historic route of the Way of St. James from Fisterra passed through Sierra de Outes. Along this route, pilgrims stopped at the chapel of “Santiago da balsa,” which stood for centuries. The route and chapel give the tradition of the Way of St. James a specific historical connection: the route marks the wider path, while the stop marks a station along it. For travelers interested in culture, this is a distinct focus alongside the nature and leisure activities. The history can thus be understood as a former pilgrimage route with a named stopping point, without conflating it with today’s route offerings.

Hiking or cycling route through natural and cultural points of interest

The Ruta de las Fervenzas de San Paio y GliptĂłgrifos da Carballa starts in Sierra de Outes and follows the course of the Tines River. As natural points of interest, the route highlights the oak grove and the San Paio waterfalls; the GliptĂłgrifos de A Carballa are an additional cultural point of interest. It therefore brings together named natural and cultural features along one route. It is suitable for hiking and can be completed entirely by bicycle. This makes the mode of transport a practical point of comparison for planning: both hiking and completing the route by bicycle are possible.

Along the Tins: riverside path and estuary

The Paseo fluvial del Tins is another riverside path. It runs along both banks of the Tins, near its estuary in Sierra de Outes. In the regional context of Sierra de Outes, the Tins estuary is a wetland of ecological, botanical and scenic interest. This gives the path a different focus from the route to the San Paio waterfalls and the oak grove: the Paseo focuses on the banks near the estuary, while the route along the Tines highlights natural and cultural points of interest. This lets you choose between the riverside paths according to the theme that interests you most.

Karting as an alternative focus

Karting Ayrton Senna offers a distinct activity option alongside the paths. The facility in Sierra de Outes has a 600-metre track and three types of go-karts for different age groups. Karting is clearly different from the natural and cultural themes of the routes: here, the track and the different types of go-karts define the experience. When weighing up your travel interests, you can choose between paths for walking or cycling and an activity on a karting track.

Getting there via Santiago and Noia

For the drive from Santiago, first take the AG-56 towards Noia. Continue along the Santiago–Noia corridor to the AC-550 Outes/Muros/Noia N exit, then take the AC-550 to Outes. Check road signs and conditions before setting out, as they may change. This way, you have the named roads and exit in mind for your journey and can plan your choice of local activities separately.
