Coiro offers a range of cultural and historical themes to discover: the Baroque Igrexa Parroquial de Santa María, the Capela da Virxe do Monte and the Cruceiro do Cirolán on the Camino de Fisterra-Muxía. There is also a pilgrimage and the Fervenza de Fírvado. You can explore architecture, sacred art, religious tradition and landscape as distinct points of interest.

Santa MarĂa: Church and Rectory

The Igrexa Parroquial de Santa María de Coiro was built during the Baroque period. Its three-part bell tower is a distinctive architectural feature. Inside are two processional crosses: one was made by silversmith Jorge Cedeira; the second was created in 1587 by Rodrigo de Pardiñas, a goldsmith from Santiago. The church’s cultural character is shaped not only by its architecture but also by its sacred art.

The church complex also includes the rectory of Santa María de Coiro. Its L-shaped floor plan encloses a courtyard. The windows are framed by moulded surrounds, and there is also a sundial. These features offer a different perspective on the complex from the parish church’s bell tower: here, the focus is on the floor plan, courtyard and individual architectural details.

Capela da Virxe do Monte

The Capela da Virxe do Monte was built in 1615 on the commission of Bartolomé Franco. Its rectangular nave, granite ashlar walls and tiled roof with two- and three-sided roof sections describe its construction. The chapel is also associated with a religious tradition: the A Romaxe pilgrimage in honour of the Virgin takes place there on the last Sunday in August. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the specific event date before making arrangements.

On the Camino de Fisterra-MuxĂa

Both the Capela da Virxe do Monte and the Cruceiro do Cirolán are located on the Camino de Fisterra-Muxía. At the chapel, the focus is on its architecture and pilgrimage; the Cruceiro is a distinct point of interest for its sculpture, which is attributed to Francisco María Rodeiro Permuy, a sculptor from Santiago. The two landmarks offer different cultural points of interest along the same pilgrimage route.

The Fervenza de FĂrvado

The Fervenza de FĂrvado adds a landscape dimension to the historical themes. Its main cascade is located where it meets the Beba River, a tributary of the Xallas. The Fervenza is not signposted; you can reach it by following the river. Check local conditions before visiting. Here, then, the focus is not on architectural styles or dates, but on the cascade within the river system and finding your way along the river.
