Five arches define the Ponte Sigüeiro; one is a Gothic pointed arch commissioned by Fernán Pérez de Andrade in the 14th century. The English Way crosses the Tambre River over the Ponte de Sigüeiro before the route enters the municipality of Santiago de Compostela. The bridge therefore brings together a distinct structure and a notable stage of the pilgrimage route.

Ponte Sigüeiro and the Routes

The history of the surrounding area extends beyond the history of its buildings. A battle took place near the Ponte Sigüeiro in 1846: on one side were troops supporting President Ramón María Narváez, and on the other were forces commanded by Colonel Miguel Solís. For anyone interested in the town’s historical context, this offers another specific point of interest alongside its architecture.

For route planning, it is worth considering the different figures. The Ruta do Tambre is a 10,240-metre circular route of natural interest along the right bank of the Tambre. It starts and ends at Praza da Foca in Sigüeiro. The Ruta do Camiño Real is 11,140 metres long and rated easy; it ends at the Ponte de Sigüeiro on the border with Santiago de Compostela. The difference between the stated route lengths is 900 metres. Their described formats also differ: one is a circular route starting and ending at the same square, while the other ends at the bridge.

Green spaces and river landscapes

The Carboeiro recreation area covers more than 60,000 m² of green space along the Carboeiro River and is located in the centre of Sigüeiro. The recreational area includes native trees. Illa do Refuxio, meanwhile, is a natural island in the middle of the Tambre, accessible via two concrete walkways. The island has a river bathing area with a small waterfall. If you plan to swim there, check before your visit whether swimming is currently permitted.

Penateixa is an open recreation area bordered by rows of alder and oak trees. From Praza da Foca, you can reach Penateixa via the CP-3801 provincial road towards Frades; the signposted turn-off is 1.5 km from the town. Check the road signs before setting off. Anglers can fish in the “Sigüeiro” fishing area on the river.

Getting there and finding your way around

The AP-9 has entry and exit ramps in Sigüeiro for A Coruña and Santiago. The N-550 crosses the municipality of Oroso from north to south. This information refers to the municipality; it does not specifically describe a route through the centre of Sigüeiro. Oroso station is near Sigüeiro. Check train connections separately before planning your journey around them.

CEICI is a municipal initiative that shares knowledge about the English Way and has its own premises in Sigüeiro’s municipal cultural centre. There is also an information point about the English Way in the municipal swimming pool, where pilgrims can get information about local services. This point operates seasonally in summer. If you plan to use the information service, check its current availability in advance.

Trout tradition and travel planning

The Festa da Troita has been held in Sigüeiro since 1996 and celebrates the local tradition of trout fishing. The programme for the 2026 edition listed a free trout tasting. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant edition. This makes attending the event a distinct part of your trip, alongside the routes and riverside spots.

These highlights can help you organise your itinerary without combining the different routes and places into a single trail.
