Discover Cedeira through several distinctive features: as a coastal town with a long urban beach, a place with archaeological traces, and a town with a maritime history. Playa de la Magdalena stretches for 1,300 metres; its calm waters are suitable for bathing, swimming and stand-up paddleboarding. If you would like to focus on something else, routes, the fortress and regional cuisine offer further themes to consider when planning your visit. First, decide whether you would rather focus on landscape, cultural history or food.
Beach, Views and Landscape
San Antonio de Corveiro offers a viewpoint overlooking the entrance to the Ría de Cedeira. The recreation area there has benches and tables and is located in a pine grove. The Ría was designated a Reserva Marina de Interés Pesquero in 2009. The designation aims to preserve biological diversity and promote the sustainable management of fisheries.
The geological heritage of the Serra da Capelada includes dunite and serpentinite outcrops as well as eclogites. The Acantilados de Herbeira rise to around 620 metres above sea level and are considered the highest cliffs on mainland Europe. These landscape features give Cedeira a distinctive focus on nature and geology, alongside its urban beach and the maritime character of the Ría.
Archaeology, the Fortress and Church Architecture
Castro Sarridal is an Iron Age archaeological site in Cedeira. On the landward side, it is protected by two walls with associated ditches. There is evidence of settlement from at least the 4th century BC to the 3rd century AD. Punta Sarridal is also home to Castillo de la Concepción, also known as Fortín de la Concepción: an 18th-century military fortress that has kept watch over the Ría de Cedeira since 1747.
The Castillo has an interpretation centre featuring ship replicas, reproductions of contemporary military clothing, weapons and reconstructed rooms. Check current opening arrangements before planning a visit. A walking trail also crosses Punta Sarridal: Do Porto á Ermida de Santo Antón de Corveiro. Archaeological features among the excavated remains of a castro there include a Pedra Formosa, or ritual sauna.
The 15th-century Gothic Igrexa de Santa María do Mar stands in the old town. Its layout comprises three naves and a polygonal apse; a dome sits above the main chapel, and the central nave features star vaults. The Museo Mares de Cedeira preserves the town’s tangible and intangible maritime heritage. Whaling is also part of its maritime history: in the Middle Ages, Cedeira was one of Galicia’s major whaling ports.
Routes and Traditions
The Georruta del Cromo is a guided seven-kilometre route of moderate difficulty. It starts at the Cruceiro de Teixidelo in Cedeira. As the tour is guided, check for a current date before adding it to your plans. Another way to explore the town is the Ruta Urbana: this circular route covers Cedeira’s fishing history, maritime trades and port infrastructure. You can complete it on foot or by mountain bike. The two routes offer different experiences: one is guided and described in terms of distance and difficulty, while the other focuses on the town and its maritime development.
The annual Rapa de las Bestias, also known as Curro de la Capelada, takes place at Pena Toxosa. Activities include rounding up the livestock, trimming the manes, marking the stallions, taming and horse racing. If you would like to include this event in your travel plans, check the specific dates locally.
Fish and Regional Cuisine
Fresh fish and seafood form the basis of Cedeira’s traditional cuisine. Dishes include Rape Cedeiresa, stuffed squid, bonito in sauce and hake in green sauce. Other culinary traditions include percebes (goose barnacles) and a puff pastry pie filled with ingredients such as bonito, salt cod with raisins, conger eel, scallops or octopus. These dishes offer a range of ways to discover the regional cuisine; individual restaurants’ offerings may vary.
