Carral combines a large Iron Age fortified site with routes that showcase different sides of the area. Castro das Travesas is a well-preserved settlement and fortified site covering more than six hectares. There is also a collection related to the site, trails with historic destinations, and a riverside trail with its own distinctive landscape. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between archaeological history, a trail with a specific destination, and a landscape perspective.
Castro das Travesas and Its Collection
The castro consists of a main enclosed area surrounded by additional areas. Each of these areas has a system of ramparts and ditches. The site is therefore defined not only by its size, but also by its layout of fortified areas.
The ColecciĂłn Visitable do Castro das Travesas is housed in the Casa da Cultura de Carral. Using original objects from the most recent archaeological excavations, it presents the history of the castro and the society that lived at this archaeological site. The collection thus complements the site's architectural features with a historical perspective on its former inhabitants.
Routes with Different Destinations
The Roteiro dos Mártires can be travelled on foot, by mountain bike, or on horseback. The Ruta dos Mártires follows a route combining urban and rural sections, from the monument in Carral to the cemetery in Paleo. Both of these destinations and the transitions between urban and rural sections shape the character of the route.
The Roteiro Mariñán – Costa da Égoa is suitable for hiking, horse riding, and cycling. However, some sections around the mills are not suitable for horses or bicycles. If choosing between these activities, take this restriction near the mills into account: it applies to individual sections, not necessarily to the entire route. The Capela de San Pedro de Rubieiro, a chapel dating from the 16th century, is also near the Roteiro.
Riverside Landscape and the Camiño Inglés
The Roteiro pola Beira do Rio Barcés follows a fishing path beneath dense riverside woodland dominated by large alders. The panoramic view extends across the Barcés Valley: fields and meadows lie along the river, while woodland covers the higher ground. Unlike the routes with named historic destinations, this one focuses on the landscape along the river.
The Camiño Inglés de Santiago also passes through Carral. You can travel the section there on foot, on horseback, or by mountain bike. These three ways of getting around are also possible on the Roteiro dos Mártires; the routes differ instead in their described destinations and landscapes.
An Annual Event in May
The Festa do Pan in Carral takes place every year around May 10; the exact date may vary from year to year. If you want to plan your stay around the festival, check the date for that year before making plans.
