A walk with a clearly stated route, varied coastal landscapes and historic buildings give Lariño several distinct highlights. The Ruta do Faro leads from Faro de Lariño to Ximprón; Playa de Lariño and nearby Ancoradoiro represent different landscape features. The surviving windmill ruins add a later historical reference point to the area’s architectural history. You can shape your stay around whether you want to focus on the walking route, the coast or the architectural history.
The Ruta do Faro: route and duration
The Ruta do Faro is a 3-kilometre walking trail of low difficulty; it takes about 45 minutes. It begins at Faro de Lariño and ends in Ximprón. Along the shore, the trail follows the sea all the way to Ximprón Beach. When planning your day, the distance and duration are two different guides: three kilometres describe the length of the route, while approximately 45 minutes provide a time frame. The endpoint matters too, since the route leads from the lighthouse to Ximprón rather than back to the starting point.
Beach, coves and lagoons
Playa de Lariño is in Carnota, on the border with Muros. It consists of a sandy spit approximately two kilometres long and a series of coves. Nearby Ancoradoiro is also on the border with Muros and is considered a landscape complex of dunes, pine forest and lagoons. This gives you a clear distinction when choosing a coastal focus: the sandy spit and coves define Playa de Lariño, while dunes, forest and lagoons take centre stage in Ancoradoiro.
Playa de Lariño in Carnota is also a stop on the first day of the Galician tourist tour “Playas de Mar Adentro”. Since the order of a tour may change, check it before planning your trip.
Lighthouses and architectural history
Faro de Lariño was built in the first third of the 19th century. It is located 27 metres above sea level; this figure refers to its elevation, not its height. As the starting point of the Ruta do Faro, the lighthouse is also part of the coastal walk.
Faro de Punta Ínsua is a stone civic building. Its distinctive architecture and the beauty of its surroundings define the structure. This lighthouse is therefore notable for different features than the dating of Faro de Lariño: its construction and setting rather than its age.
Windmill ruins close to the sea
The ruins of an old windmill, built around 1914, have been preserved close to the sea. The windmill was built around 1914, significantly later than Faro de Lariño in the first third of the 19th century. The different dates mark two historical periods: the lighthouse represents the early 19th century, and the windmill the period around 1914.
