Landscape and rural character

Cabanamoura lies on the western slope of the A Pena mountain range, at the foot of the Monteagudo and Pedra da Vella peaks. The meanders of the RĂo Das Donas flow towards their mouth in the Tambre marshes; the Tambre estuary is part of the Esteiro do Tambre Natura 2000 site. Small agricultural hamlets, cattle pastures and small maize fields lie in the valley of the RĂo Donas stream. For your trip, this offers two distinct points of focus: the landscape shaped by the terrain and water, and the agricultural use of the valley. If you want to understand the area through more than its individual sights, you can bring these two perspectives together.

Cabana Moura lies in the inner part of the RĂa de Muros-Noia; the Camino de Santiago to Finisterre is another regional point of reference.

Culture, crafts and dates

Cabanamoura is one of the 13 castros in the parish of Santo Ourente in Outes; a castro is a fortified settlement. The Pedrafita of Cabana Moura in Santo Ourente de EntĂns may be interpreted as a menhir, a large stone set upright. The terms describe different things: a type of settlement and a single upright stone. At present, about four craftswomen in the parish of Santo Ourente still make Sancosmeiro hats.

The Camiño de Muros-Noia was officially recognised as a Camino de Santiago route on 15 December 2020; Outes is one of the municipalities it passes through. The pilgrimage to San Campio takes place on 28 and 29 September—a recurring date that is clearly distinct from the one-off date on which the route was recognised.

Horse riding and hiking

Estivada Equestre in Santo Ourente offers private lessons, group rides and riding routes in the surrounding area. These formats differ: lessons, group rides and routes each offer a different kind of riding activity. You can first decide whether you prefer a lesson or a ride or route.

Two points of reference are useful when planning a hike: the Ruta Pedra da Vella starts at Casa Perfeuto MarĂa in Cabanamoura; the Cabanamoura hiking route continues north from a crossroads on the northern edge of the village. The reference points therefore differ: a starting point for the first route, and a crossroads followed by a northerly direction for the second. Check the route details locally before setting out, as paths or signage may change.
