Lestedo can be explored through two particularly different themes: the Festa da Filloa and its Carnival tradition, and Pico Sacro, with its distinctive quartz formation and sweeping views. There is also a distinctive collection of religious architecture. If you are planning a visit, you can decide what to focus on—the festival calendar, the panorama or the architectural history—depending on the occasion. The festival and market dates follow different rhythms.

Filloa and Carnival

The Festa da Filloa de Lestedo is designated a festival of national tourist interest. It is celebrated on Piñata Sunday, the Sunday after Shrove Tuesday. Filloa is one of Galicia’s most traditional sweet dishes and has special significance in households and restaurants during Carnival. The festival places this culinary tradition at its heart.

The Festa also includes a gathering of the “xenerais”: traditional Carnival figures from the Ulla region. The event thus brings together food and a regionally rooted Carnival tradition. Piñata Sunday is a useful reference point for planning; as the date is tied to Carnival, it is advisable to check the festival dates for your intended year of travel in advance.

Pico Sacro: quartz formation and views

Pico Sacro is a quartz formation created by tectonic movements, with a striking pyramidal shape. From the summit, the view extends across much of central Galicia, especially the Ulla Valley. Here, geology and views go together: the mountain’s distinctive shape can be linked to its origins, while the view from the summit takes in the wider landscape.

You can travel by private car or bus as far as the Capela de San Sebastián, which is close to the summit; you cover the final stretch on foot. Free guided sightseeing tours of Pico Sacro are also available by prior reservation. If you are planning to travel by bus, check the connection in advance; the guided tour reservation is part of planning your visit.

Interpretation centre and route connections

At the foot of Pico Sacro, in the hamlet of Cachosenande, is the Centro de Interpretación do Pico Sacro. Its permanent exhibition is titled “O Pico Sacro, nos dominios da raíña Lupa”. Information panels, a room with a photography exhibition, and another room with a model and video focus on local culture and the significance of Pico Sacro. The centre offers a distinct way to explore the mountain, complementing its views and geological formation.

The Ruta do Pico Sacro begins beside the interpretation centre in Cachosenande. The Vía da Prata also runs west of the mountain’s base on its way to Santiago. These are two different reference points for planning: a local route starting beside the centre, and the course of a pilgrimage route at the foot of the mountain. Overnight stays for pilgrim groups may be available at the Pavillón Polideportivo de Lestedo by prior reservation. This option is specifically for groups and requires a reservation.

Churches and religious heritage

Santa María de Lestedo was rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style at the beginning of the 20th century. Its stained-glass windows date from 2005. The construction history of the Capilla de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes goes further back: building began in 1883 so that local people could attend religious services on market days. The chapel follows simple, classically influenced architectural lines characteristic of 19th-century Historicism.

Lestedo’s religious historical heritage also includes four granite crosses depicting Christ crucified and the Virgin Mary. Together, the buildings and crosses mentioned here show different facets of local religious history: from a 19th-century building project to the Neo-Gothic reconstruction and the later stained-glass windows. This makes it possible to explore the architecture through specific features rather than reducing it to a single style or period.

Market dates and travel planning

The Feira-mercado de Lestedo takes place on the first and third Sunday of every month. This regular monthly schedule differs from the Carnival-linked date of the Festa da Filloa. If you want to plan your trip around either event, check the specific dates in advance. This lets you coordinate your visit with the event you want to attend without treating the two calendars as if they were the same.

For pilgrim groups, the overnight accommodation option at the Pavillón, which requires a reservation, is a separate option; it should not be confused with general hotel accommodation.
