When planning a stay in Vilaüt, you can focus on two main themes: the landscape around the Estany de Vilaüt and the historical traces of the Castell de Vilaüt. At the Estany, there is a circular route, a section of the Roses–Vilaüt MTB route and distinctive features of the basin; at the Castell, the focus is on the remains of the fortification and a possible historical interpretation.

Estany de Vilaüt: on foot or by bike

The official Estany de Vilaüt circular walking route is 2.8 km long. The Roses–Vilaüt MTB route reaches the Estany via a flat section with ponds and pastureland. These offer different perspectives for planning: here, the total length of a circular route is given; there, a characteristic stretch within a cycling route. This helps you decide whether you want to walk around the Estany or head there on the MTB route. Check the current route and signage before setting out.

If you are travelling with a dog, note the route rule: dogs are allowed on only half of the path around the Estany de Vilaüt and must always be kept on a lead. Check the current parking information before your visit so you can plan your walk accordingly.

Another distinctive feature is the Aguait de l’Estany: it was the first observatory built in Catalonia. It dates from 1983. Its construction gives the site a specific historical reference and sets this observatory apart because of its early place in Catalonia.

A landscape between water and granite

The deepest part of the Estany de Vilaüt basin remains more or less permanently flooded. Water is therefore a lasting feature of this part of the basin. The geology also shapes the landscape around Vilaüt: two large cork oaks grow on a granite outcrop typical of the area. Together, they provide a shady place to rest.

At this spot, the two cork oaks combine the characteristic granite outcrop with a practical place to rest. Those wishing to understand the Estany landscape will find several distinct features: the permanently flooded deepest part of the basin, the observatory and the vegetation on the granite. These features complement the route options and give a stay here its own focus on nature and landscape.

Fortification remains and early local history

The Castell de Vilaüt preserves the remains of a fortification. These include sections of the surrounding walls and the remains of a possibly square or rectangular tower.

The Castell de Vilaüt may have been a Roman villa beside the former Estany de Castelló. This is one possible interpretation and should not be treated as a confirmed identification. The Castell can thus be connected both with the visible remains of the fortification and with a more distant historical interpretation that should be treated with caution.

Vilaüt is one of the small settlements mentioned in a medieval document from 982. Fishing also shaped the history of the settlement: it was a traditional economic activity and contributed to the development of the medieval hamlet of Vilaüt. Together, these details point to different historical layers—the early mention of the settlement and an activity that helped shape its development. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose how much to focus on the natural features of the Estany and how much on the archaeological and historical traces of the hamlet.
