Serrat is a small hamlet at an altitude of about 1,300 metres. Its cultural character is shaped by the church of Mare de Déu del Serrat and the chapel of Mare de Déu del Remei, as well as routes that pass through the village. This brings two questions together: which architectural details define the sacred buildings, and which routes connect Serrat with the surrounding area?
Church and Chapel in Serrat
The church of Mare de Déu del Serrat consists of a single nave and a narrower, semicircular apse. The apse forms the rounded end of the church interior. The west façade features a portal with a wedge-shaped arch, a round window and a two-arched bell gable. The floor plan and façade details thus offer two distinct aspects to explore. A wedge-shaped arch is formed by wedge-shaped stones that fit together above the portal to create an arch.
In the 17th century, the nave was extended and raised. This detail of the building’s history adds a specific alteration to that part of the structure to the description of its spatial form. The chapel of Mare de Déu del Remei is a prominent feature of the hamlet of Serrat. Historically, Serrat was part of the former parish of Fustanya. The church’s architectural classification and the village’s former ecclesiastical affiliation thus complement one another.
Routes Through the Hamlet
The Volta en BTT per la Vall is a circular mountain-bike route that passes through Serrat. The Vuelta por la Vall de Ribes – Ruta 16 also runs through the hamlet. Check the current conditions for each route before planning your trip; trail conditions on the mountain-bike route may vary seasonally.
The route pels veïnats de l’Alt Freser passes by Serrat’s small church on its way into the village, then continues along its cobbled streets. This circular route is approximately 15 kilometres long. It runs through the Freser Valley, passing through Serrat, Fustanyà, Rialb and Batet, before returning to Ribes de Freser via Collet de Segura.
The routes differ in their focus: the Volta en BTT is clearly identified as a mountain-bike activity, while the approximately 15-kilometre circuit can be understood by following its villages and return leg. When planning, you can first consider whether the activity itself or the route through several villages is more important to you.
Getting There via the Track
Serrat can be reached via the same track as Fustanyà. After crossing the Freser Bridge, take the turnoff at the last bend on the road from Ribes to Queralbs. The road, bridge and turnoff are the key landmarks. Road and track conditions can change, so check them before your journey.
