Santa Cristina D'Aro offers several distinct points of interest for planning a trip: a geologically striking landscape, coastal coves and cultural sites from different eras. You can tailor your stay to your interests, whether they lie mainly in nature, archaeological sites or literary themes. Activities also vary: guided routes, individual historical sites and a literary walk each offer a different focus.

A landscape between granite and coast

The Massís de les Cadiretes, also known as l’Ardenya, is listed in Catalonia as an area of geological interest. Its striking features include granite formations such as domes and rock towers. The Ridaura runs through an agroforestry plain and forms an important biological corridor. The municipality’s coastline includes Cala Canyet, Cala del Senyor Ramon and Vallpresona. The small coves are surrounded by cliffs; their species-rich seabeds feature Posidonia seagrass meadows. At Cala Canyet, the nautical club offers sailing and diving courses, among other activities. This provides a distinct point of reference for activities on the water, while the granite formations and river corridor highlight other aspects of the landscape.

Archaeology, architecture and literature

The Església de Sant Martí de Romanyà is a pre-Romanesque church dating from the second half of the 10th century or the beginning of the 11th century. Plana Basarda offers a different historical perspective: the Iberian settlement was inhabited between the 4th and 1st centuries BC and stood on a plateau 300 metres high. It had a defensive wall, a water cistern and around thirty grain silos. The two sites therefore have clearly distinct themes: pre-Romanesque church architecture at one, and a settlement with defensive and supply features at the other. The Dolmen de la Cova d’en Daina is easily accessible to visitors and adds another archaeological site to the selection.

Culture can also be discovered in different ways. The collection of dioramas in Solius was started in 1970 and has artistic, popular and religious value. The Rodoreda–Romanyà literary walk explores places in Romanyà de la Selva through the books and readings of Mercè Rodoreda. Those interested in literature will find a different way in than through buildings or archaeological remains.

Choose routes by theme and terrain

Guided hiking, cycling and cultural heritage routes with experienced guides are organised in Santa Cristina d'Aro throughout the year. The route to Castell de Solius has a specific terrain description: it follows paths and tracks with gentle ascents and descents, while one section of the climb is more challenging. The level of difficulty therefore varies along the route. A section of the former railway line runs from Santa Cristina d'Aro through Castell d'Aro and Platja d'Aro to Sant Feliu de GuĂxols and can be explored on foot or by bike. These route options differ in the features described: for the route to the castle, the changing terrain matters; for the former railway line, it is the route through the named towns.

Plan your journey and visits

Santa Cristina d'Aro can be reached by car, bus or a combination of train and bus. This information can help you choose how to travel without predetermining the type of excursion. Also note that visiting conditions vary between individual attractions: the Dolmen de la Cova d’en Daina is easily accessible to visitors, whereas visits to the Gran Museu de la Màgia “La Casa Màgica” require an appointment in advance. When planning your stay, you can weigh up the landscape, guided routes and cultural sites while also taking the conditions for each specific visit into account.
