Riudarenes can be explored from several perspectives: Sant Martà and Castell d’Argimon offer contrasting historical highlights, while the trails and landscape open up further perspectives. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish the linear hiking trail, the BTT circular route and the network of trails by their respective characteristics.
Sant MartĂ: Construction phases and the history of 1640
The present-day building of the Església de Sant Martà de Riudarenes dates from the 16th and 17th centuries; the bell tower dates from the 18th century. On 3 May 1640, the church was burned down and devastated by the soldiers of the Terç de Moles. This took place during the uprising that sparked the Reapers’ War. The present-day building was constructed in the second half of the 17th century. The church has a square Baroque-style granite entrance portal; the building inscription bears the date 1730.
Argimon: Chapel, tower and viewpoint
At the site of Castell d’Argimon, the remains of a square, eight-metre-high tower and the original 11th-century chapel have been preserved. The Romanesque chapel has two naves, a semicircular apse and remnants of wall paintings. Castell d’Argimon stands on the hill of Argimon in the western part of the municipality; an easy, well-maintained forest track leads there from l’Esparra. The castle also has a viewpoint with sweeping views across the entire La Selva region. Sant Martà brings together different construction phases and a dated portal inscription; at Argimon, the surviving remains of the tower and chapel take centre stage.
Hiking trails with different profiles
The CamĂ dels Segadors is a 17-kilometre linear hiking trail rated easy. It connects the first foothills of the Guilleries near Santa Coloma de Farners with the plain of La Selva near Vidreres, passing through Riudarenes, Sils and Vidreres. Its linear layout distinguishes it from a circular route: it runs between the landscapes mentioned above. The BTT circular route Centre a la Selva represents a different type of route. It is part of a regional trail network considered to be well maintained and properly signposted; the route can be started in any municipality along its course.
Riudarenes also has a network of health-promoting trails with short, medium and long routes. The Parc UrbĂ de Salut de Riudarenes (Centre CĂvic) is designated as an urban health park. When choosing between the options, route format, difficulty level and route length can be weighted differently: for the CamĂ dels Segadors, length and rating; for Centre a la Selva, its circular format; and for the health trails, the three distance categories.
Riera de Santa Coloma and white stork migration
The protected area of the Riera de Santa Coloma, together with the agricultural use of the flatter areas, forms a natural landscape of considerable scenic importance. Riudarenes also lies on a white stork migration route. Its natural features thus include both the protected area and the agricultural land, as well as bird migration.
