The east-facing apse of the church of Sant Pere d’Olopte rests on a plinth more than three metres high. This specific architectural detail leads directly to one of Olopte’s distinctive cultural highlights. A protected natural area, a geological outcrop and hiking destinations are also among the themes that can shape your travel plans. To help you choose, it is useful to distinguish between architectural history, geology and trails through the landscape: Olopte offers specific points of interest in each of these areas.

Nature and geology

The Tossals d’Isòvol i Olopte are home to plant species that are very rare in Catalonia, as well as endemic cave-dwelling invertebrates. The Tossals d’Isòvol i Olopte are a protected natural area. Its biological features sit alongside the hiking and landscape experiences that visitors may also associate with this area.

The Esterregalls d’Olopte are of particular geological importance for sedimentology and geomorphology. They form a small badlands outcrop made up of conglomerates and dark-coloured clay sediments. The specific composition of the rocks and sediments gives geology its own focus here: it is not just about the views, but also the nature of the outcrop. Together with the area’s biological features, this creates a nature experience that offers different perspectives.

Sant Pere and traces of the past

The church of Sant Pere d’Olopte was built between the 12th and 13th centuries. The portal features heads and anthropomorphic figures—that is, human-like forms—in a seemingly primitivist style. The building itself has another striking feature: its east-facing apse rests on a plinth more than three metres high. The construction period, the portal design and the elevated apse give the church several specific features that can guide your exploration of its architecture.

Another trace of the past is the Força d’Olopte. It was probably located on the hill beside the church, but almost no remains have survived. The construction period of Sant Pere can be stated, whereas the location of the Força remains uncertain and few structural traces are still visible. This difference makes the two sites interesting in distinct ways: the church, with its surviving architectural features, and a historic structure whose location is uncertain and whose remains are scarce.

Hikes and outdoor destinations

You can go hiking in the Tossals d’Isòvol i Olopte natural area. A viewpoint in a former quarry for Isòvol’s distinctive pink marble offers good views. Alongside the natural area itself, this is a specific destination connected to local marble.

Two routes with different itineraries can help you plan: the extension to the Paradolmen del Tossal d’Isòvol can be reached on foot from Olopte, while a circular hike around the Tossal d’Isòvol starts and ends in Olopte. This gives you a choice between a named destination and a route that returns to its starting point. Which option best suits your plans depends mainly on whether you want to visit the Paradolmen or take a loop around the Tossal.

The Coves d’Olopte

The Coves d’Olopte are not easy to access. At Cova B d’Olopte, two entrances join after a few metres to form a low gallery; access is technically challenging. The caves are also considered prehistoric dwellings on the eastern slope of Montcurto, also called Tossal d’Olopte. If you are interested in the caves, you will find an archaeological context here as well as a specific idea of the layout of Cova B; the difficult access remains an important distinction from the hiking destinations described above.
