Saga offers a cultural highlight and a direct connection to the Camí de Sant Jaume. Santa Eugènia de Saga is listed as a place of interest on the route’s third stage; at the same time, historical references to the parish of Saga date back to the 10th century. This gives you both local and church history to consider when planning your trip, alongside a clearly defined stage of the Way of St James.
Church, Parish and Architectural Heritage
Santa Eugènia de Saga is located in the hamlet of Saga, northeast of Ger and on the N-260. The parish of Saga has been mentioned since the 10th century. This date refers to the parish, not to the construction date of the church building. A later art-historical reference is the altarpiece from the first half of the 13th century. These two details open up different periods: the early mention of the parish and the dating of a specific work of art. Saga is also one of the villages that illustrate traditional Pyrenean architectural styles. This architectural context offers another perspective alongside the history of the parish and the altarpiece’s art history.
The polychrome wooden altarpiece from Santa Eugènia de Saga depicts the life of Saint Eugènia in four scenes. It is kept at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Its origin and present location should therefore be distinguished: the work comes from Santa Eugènia de Saga, but is now in Paris. Its material, subject and date—painted wood, the life of the saint and the first half of the 13th century—provide a clear context for this art-historical reference.
Church Visit and Guided Tour
A guided tour announced on 14 June 2022 was titled “Les claus de les esglésies de la Cerdanya” and focused particularly on church portals. Santa Eugènia de Saga was among the churches included. The description at the time said that visitors would tour the interiors of the participating churches and learn about their distinctive features. According to the description, most of these churches were usually closed to the public. Visits to the interiors and explanations were part of the guided tour. As the announcement dates from 2022, check whether the tour is currently available before making plans.
The Camí de Sant Jaume
The route also offers a distinct way to explore Saga. The origins of the Camí de Sant Jaume date back to prehistoric times; the route can be experienced on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The third stage is listed as 9 km and 80 m in length, with a duration of 1 hour and 40 minutes. Santa Eugènia de Saga is listed as a place of interest on this particular stage. The different ways of travelling describe the route in general, while the distance and duration apply to this individual stage. This means the time estimate can be attributed to the third stage rather than the entire Camí. Check the current route conditions before setting out.
