Two hiking routes are especially useful for getting your bearings in El Mas Fumats: the E25 leads from the GI-614 via Puig de Queralbs to Castell de Verdera; “Pels dominis de Sant Pere de Rodes” runs from Bellavista through olive groves to the development. The area also has a history encompassing agricultural use and the gradual creation of the holiday-home development.
Hiking Routes: Ridge, Castle and Olive Groves
The E25 route, “Pujada al castell de Verdera,” begins on the GI-614, opposite the A7 road from Roses to Mas Fumats. It passes east of Mas Fumats to Puig de Queralbs and then follows the ridge to Castell de Verdera. The road-side starting point, Puig, ridge and castle provide a clear sequence of named landmarks along the route.
The route “Pels dominis de Sant Pere de Rodes” leads from Bellavista along a relatively flat path through olive groves to the Mas Fumats development. Compared with the E25, its described focus is the path through the olive groves and the approach to the settlement, while the E25 includes the ridge and Castell de Verdera. The two routes therefore differ in their scenery.
At the southeastern end of the development, “Pels dominis de Sant Pere de Rodes” follows a path to the GI-614, crosses it and continues for about 90 m along a side road to the Can Palau intersection. Paths, road conditions and signage may change; check the route before setting out.
In the now-concluded “Roses a peu” format, a hiking route began and ended in Mas Fumats. The E25, by contrast, starts on the GI-614.
Agriculture, Holiday-Home Development and Dolmen
Until the 1960s, the area was used for agriculture. Farming included cork oaks, olive groves, gardens and vineyards. Mas Fumats developed into today’s holiday-home community gradually, as these houses were built, a process driven by the property development company EREC SL and numerous private individuals. Both agricultural use and the holiday-home development built up over time are therefore part of the area’s history. Olive groves were part of its earlier agricultural use; the route from Bellavista to Mas Fumats passes through olive groves.
The Dolmen del Puig Saquera is another cultural and historical landmark. It lies on a steep mountain ridge above the Mas Fumats development, at an elevation of about 300 m above sea level.
