A large part of Parc Natural del Cadí-Moixeró lies within the municipality of Guardiola De Berguedà. At the same time, its points of interest range from Romanesque buildings and medieval connections to a mine where mining history and natural heritage come together. For planning your trip, it helps to make a clear choice: should your stay focus mainly on historic sites, a particular route or a local food festival?

Landscape and mining history

The Mina de Petroli de Riutort is a special place in Parc Natural del Cadí-Moixeró, where natural heritage, mining history and landscape come together. At the restored entrance and in sections of the 340-metre-long tunnels, visitors can see marl and limestone layers as well as oil seeping out, and experience the characteristic hydrocarbon smell. This makes the mine a tangible point of reference if you would like to explore nature and culture together rather than separately.

The routes also offer different points of interest. Els Empedrats starts in the hamlet of l'Hostalet and leads to the Bullidor de la Llet, a water source in cracks in the limestone wall. The Cop d'ull als cingles de Vallcebre route starts at El Jou, a former farmhouse on a plateau above the Llobregat and directly below the cingles de Vallcebre. In this way, Els Empedrats leads from the hamlet of l'Hostalet to the Bullidor de la Llet, while Cop d'ull als cingles de Vallcebre starts at El Jou on a plateau below the cliffs.

Monasteries, churches and historic routes

The Monestir de Sant Llorenç is documented from as early as 898. Archaeological excavations have uncovered parts of the cloister, the guesthouse and the mill basin. The church of Sant Andreu de Gréixer was consecrated in 871 by Bishop Guisad of Urgell. These dates offer different historical points of reference: an early documentary mention for the monastery, and a specific consecration year for Sant Andreu.

Sant Climent de Vallcebre, also known as Torre de Foix, was consecrated in 1042 by Bishop Eribau of Urgell. The single-nave Romanesque church has a partly collapsed barrel vault and a semicircular apse. Sant Martí de Brocà is another example of Romanesque architecture, with Lombard influences. The current structure of Pont de Guardiola is Gothic in style; the bridge was altered in the 18th century.

In the Middle Ages, the old royal road ran along the Llobregat by Castell de Guardiola. It connected the County of Cerdanya with the County of Barcelona. At the Monestir de Sant Llorenç, Nits Musicals has provided another cultural highlight for more than 60 years without interruption: the initiative organizes a music series there.

Routes with different starting points

The starting points are a good place to begin when comparing the routes. The Guardiola a la Mina de Petroli de Riutort route starts at the church square in Guardiola De Berguedà and follows the GR 4 and PR-C 158 markers. The Camí de Picasso starts at the Guardiola De Berguedà railway station and passes the Monestir de Sant Llorenç prop Bagà. The Dues visions de Guardiola route starts and ends at Plaça de l'Ajuntament. The three routes start in different places: at the church square, the railway station and Plaça de l'Ajuntament, which is also the finish for Dues visions de Guardiola.

Another way to get your bearings is the Camí dels Bons Homes: its fourth stage passes through Gréixer and Escriu and by Refugi de Sant Jordi; all three places are within the municipality of Guardiola De Berguedà. Cavalls del Vent is different: it is a marked crossing of about 97 kilometres between eight staffed mountain refuges in Parc Natural del Cadí-Moixeró. The approximate distance and number of refuges help you consider this route as a separate undertaking rather than equating it with the shorter local routes described here.

The Guardiola – Brocà – Sant Marc – Guardiola route also has a specific connection to the area: it starts near the town hall, passes through Terradellas and Plans de Rotllan, and heads towards Brocà. The Ruta de la Marmota starts at Xalet de Coll de Pal.

Festivals and local dishes

The Festa del bolet takes place in October. It begins with the Correbolet, a tour of bars and restaurants in the municipality where mushroom tapas are sampled, followed by a concert. On Sunday morning, the program also includes a mushroom cooking competition and a tasting of mushroom dishes. La Truitada offers a different culinary focus: it takes place on the first Sunday in May at Font de l'Avellaner and serves large omelettes to participants.

On 8 December, the Mercat de Nadal i Fira de l'escudella features Christmas stalls and the preparation of Escudella on site. Escudella, sausage and desserts are served. The three occasions therefore cater to different interests: mushroom dishes and a concert at the Festa del bolet, omelettes at La Truitada, and a Christmas market and communal meal at the December fair. Check the event dates before your trip if they are important to your stay.

Plan your stay

Guardiola De Berguedà offers ways to explore architectural history, nature and regional food. When searching for a hotel, you can first decide which of these aspects matters most for your trip. If you choose a route, take note of its stated starting point; if a festival is your main focus, plan around its stated date.
