Camuñas can be explored through three distinct interests: the Pecados y Danzantes festival, the history of its buildings, and the views from Cerro de San Cristóbal. This makes the town appealing to travellers who want to combine cultural discoveries with an excursion outdoors. The following stops offer different highlights—from a vibrant tradition to architecture and a sweeping panorama.

Pecados y Danzantes: a wordless performance

During the Corpus Christi celebration, Pecados y Danzantes is performed as ritual open-air theatre. Two groups make their way through the town in a wordless performance. The movement through Camuñas is therefore part of the performance as described; it is not a stage scene confined to a single location. Those interested in the tradition can explore it both through this public form of performance and through its history.

The origins of Pecados y Danzantes are dated to between the 16th and 17th centuries. The festival is recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional and has been declared intangible cultural heritage in the category of Bien Inmaterial as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). These two recognitions underscore the festival’s cultural significance, while the dating of its origins offers a longer historical perspective.

The festival at the Centro de Interpretación

The Centro de Interpretación Pecados y Danzantes offers an educational tour of the festival. Documents, photographs, historical costume pieces, and explanatory panels present different ways of exploring the celebration. Six costumes representing different characters are also on display. They bring the tradition’s cast of characters to life, while the other exhibits explore further aspects of the festival.

Seven audiovisual features about the festival complement the tour; they are subtitled in Spanish and English. Texts, objects, and audiovisual content are presented side by side, rather than focusing on just one form of interpretation. Confirm the current presentation arrangements before visiting.

Churches and local history

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was designed from 1794 onwards, based on plans by Juan de Villanueva. Its architecture is described as simple and restrained, combining Renaissance and Neoclassical features. Unusually steep slate roofs further characterise the building. Visitors interested in architecture will find both a stylistic context and a distinctive feature to look out for.

The Ermita de la Vera Cruz offers a different historical perspective and is considered the oldest building in Camuñas. Its existence is mentioned in a 1655 account of a visit by two members of the Order of Saint John. The Iglesia and the Ermita thus represent different kinds of historical evidence: one concerns design and construction from 1794 onwards, while the other is mentioned in a 17th-century account.

Molino de viento La Unión

The windmill Molino de viento La Unión was recognised as a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2003. It already appears in an illustration of Camuñas published in 1769. The mill is considered to be more than 250 years old.

Admission to the mill is free; a visit requires an appointment in advance through the Centro de Interpretación. Check the appointment procedure beforehand.

Panoramic views from Cerro de San Cristóbal

Those looking for a landscape perspective after the cultural stops can find one at Cerro de San Cristóbal. From there, the 360-degree panorama stretches across the La Mancha plain to the first foothills of the Montes de Toledo. A short excursion offers the chance to take in the view and experience sunrise and sunset. Cerro de San Cristóbal thus provides a clear contrast to the historic buildings and the exhibition about Pecados y Danzantes.
