The municipality of Tamajón lies within the boundaries of the Parque Natural de la Sierra Norte de Guadalajara. Its defining natural features include the karst landscape of the Ciudad Encantada and the Laguna de Tamajón; meanwhile, the church and chapel tell the story of the town’s architectural history. Several trails begin in Tamajón. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose to focus on hiking routes, natural attractions or historic buildings.

Trails and karst landscape

If you want to explore on foot, you’ll find a variety of routes leading to different destinations. The Antiguo camino de Tamajón a Retiendas starts in the town center. A section of the GR-60 to Campillo de Ranas also starts in Tamajón. The Tamajón–Muriel–Peñamira route begins here too and reaches the Laguna de Tamajón early on. The lake is therefore a specific waypoint on this route and also a place to rest, with sweeping views of Pico Ocejón.

La Pequeña Ciudad Encantada is a circular route that starts and ends in Tamajón and leads to the unusual rock formation of the same name. The Ciudad Encantada de Tamajón is a limestone karst landscape whose formations were shaped by different types of erosion. This makes it a different kind of excursion from routes leading to Retiendas or Campillo de Ranas.

CIPAT offers guided walking tours through the surroundings of the Parque Natural de la Sierra Norte de Guadalajara. The routes are easy and last about two hours. To compare route lengths, the PR-GU 03 Camino del Arcipreste, which is connected with Tamajón, is 13 km long, while the BTT-3 Tamajón–Almiruete mountain-biking route is 14 km long. Conditions on these routes may change; check them before setting out.

Architectural history and culture

The Iglesia Parroquial de Nª Sª de la Asunción is a Romanesque building dating from the 13th century. Its features include ribbed vaults and a tower; the Montúfar chapel dates from the 17th century. The Ermita de Nª Sª de los Enebrales also has a long architectural history: the chapel dates from the 16th century and has a porch that was extended in the Renaissance style in the 18th century.

CIPAT covers three subject areas: palaeontology, archaeology and geology. The geology section focuses on La Piedra de Tamajón. In this way, the center’s exhibits complement the historic buildings with a look at the area’s geological history.

The Mercado Medieval de Tamajón is a regular cultural event. It takes place every year and has been held more than twenty times. If the market is important to your trip, check the exact dates in advance so you can plan your visit around it.

Getting there and practical planning

Tamajón is 49 km from Guadalajara. The route follows the CM-101 to Fontanar and Humanes, then the CM-1004 to Tamajón. As road conditions and routes may change, check your journey before setting out. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Tamajón, first decide whether you want your excursions to focus mainly on the hiking trails, the karst landscape or the buildings.

The CIPAT building is accessible to people with reduced mobility and has parking for cars, buses, motorcycles and bicycles. Confirm the accessibility and parking information again before your visit. There is a free parking area next to the entrance to the Ciudad Encantada de Tamajón; confirm this parking option locally before you travel as well.
