Villar del Humo offers several distinct options for a stay: prehistoric rock art in the Sierra de las Cuerdas, a geological viewpoint and a signposted circular walk along the RĂo Vencherque. A confirmed reservation is required to visit the Cultural Park and must be made at least 24 hours in advance. This allows you to plan cultural heritage and landscape trails as separate priorities.

Rock Art and the Landscape of the Sierra de las Cuerdas

The rock art complex comprises 31 sites with prehistoric rock paintings and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin on the Iberian Peninsula.” The paintings are spread across natural rock shelters and small caves set within the mountain landscape of the Sierra de las Cuerdas. The natural features of the sites are therefore as much a part of the complex as the paintings themselves.

One historical landmark is the Abrigo rupestre La Peña del Escrito rock shelter: its rock paintings were discovered in 1917 by forestry engineer E. O’Kelly. At the Fuente de Selva Pascuala rock shelter, a depiction of the sun with rays ending in four-fingered hands has been preserved. The open Selva Pascuala rock shelter lies along the upper course of the Rambla del Anear, outside the Callejones de Potencio geological formation. These specific locations illustrate different aspects of the rock art area: its discovery, a distinctive image motif and a clearly described position in the landscape.

The Ruta Pascuala is an approximately three-hour visit route to the rock paintings at the Abrigo de Selva Pascuala and the Abrigo “La rambla” in the Villar del Humo rock art area. The duration may vary depending on the group and visitor service conditions. Treat the time given as an approximate planning guide, not a schedule accurate to the minute.

Reservations and Visitor Facilities

A reservation must be confirmed and made at least 24 hours in advance to visit the Cultural Park. Allow for this lead time and check the current reservation conditions before travelling. The rock art complex open to visitors includes a visitor car park, an exhibition room and an audiovisual room. If you want to include any of these facilities in your plans, check their current availability before your visit.

Viewpoint and Circular Walk

Torre Balbina is a distinctive natural formation and a geological landmark of the municipality. It can be reached from Villar del Humo via well-signposted trails and serves as a viewpoint. If you want to visit a specific viewpoint during your outing, you can make Torre Balbina a focus of your plans.

The SL-CU 07 Paseo Fluvial del Río Vencherque circular trail starts at Villar del Humo’s main square and follows the banks of the nearby river. Unlike the single viewpoint at Torre Balbina, this trail is defined as much by its circular route as by its riverside course. This offers a choice of two different ways to experience the landscape: a geological landmark with a viewpoint, or a named circular walk along the Vencherque.
