Valdemoro-Sierra combines a settlement adapted to the terrain with historic buildings, ancient trails and a seasonal natural phenomenon at La Balsa. When planning your trip, you can explore the town center and trails through the municipality as distinct areas of interest: the parish church and traditional buildings are in the town, while castles, archaeological remains and landscapes can be discovered along the trails. The PR-CU 20 offers specific waypoints, although its route is not clearly marked everywhere.

Hiking and mountain biking on traditional trails

Traditional trails offer opportunities to hike through the municipality and connect with the surrounding mountain landscape. Mountain biking is also possible in the largely unaltered landscape of the SerranĂa. For hiking, the PR-CU 20 provides specific points of reference: an uphill trail leads to Castillo de Las Navazas. From there, the route continues along a steep section to Castillo del Aljibe. It also reaches Castillo de la Sierra, then descends along slopes toward the valley. Along the route at La Cerrada, you can see old stone walls.

Take trail conditions into account when planning your trip. Some sections of the PR-CU 20 are not clearly marked, and difficult stretches arise after heavy rain or snowmelt. Check the route’s safety information before setting out.

Townscape and archaeological heritage

In the town center stands the Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, Valdemoro-Sierra’s most important historic building. Traditional architecture includes masonry buildings and streets adapted to the terrain. The construction style and layout of the streets reveal the relationship between the built environment and the topography.

Along the road to Beamud, 1.5 kilometers away, lies the Celtiberian oppidum of Los Casares. It is considered one of the largest Celtiberian oppida in the province. The stone courses of building foundations and a defensive wall with its entrances can still be seen. The church and the oppidum offer different ways to explore the area’s cultural heritage: an important building in the town center and the visible remains of a fortified settlement along the road to Beamud.

La Balsa and the forest landscape

La Balsa is accessible by car; check access before your visit, as the route may change. The site is 200 meters from a karst spring. During certain seasons, water emerges from the spring, forms cascades and a tufa formation, and eventually flows into the RĂo GuadazaĂłn. At La Balsa, there are benches and a small structure that can be used for eating and resting. Do not enter flooded areas or walk on the tufa formations.

Valdemoro-Sierra’s landscape combines pine forests and Mediterranean scrubland into a continuous woodland. The municipality borders the Serranía de Cuenca Nature Park to the north; Valdemoro-Sierra is also in the geographical area around the Río Cabriel valley. If you are planning specific activities in the nature park, check the protected area’s boundaries and management information beforehand.

Events and seasonal highlights

Local celebrations center on the Feast of the Virgen de la AsunciĂłn on August 15; local calendars may vary. Check the dates if you would like to plan your trip around this occasion. Nature observation at the karst spring follows a different calendar: water emerges there only during certain seasons. The feast day and the seasonal flow of water are therefore two separate points of reference for planning when to visit.
