Mira lies between gorges and pine-covered hills, along the river of the same name. The Hoces del rĂo Mira are horseshoe-shaped gorges whose lush underwater vegetation provides the basis for a diverse fish population. The landscape, trails and architectural heritage offer different ways to get to know the area.
Gorges, river and hiking trails
The botanical trail through the Hoz de Mira follows signposted paths through natural gorges and includes viewpoints and rest areas. The SL-CU 06, the Hoz de Mira thematic trail, is a two-kilometre marked hiking route. The Mira–EnguĂdanos section of the GR-64 offers a different time commitment: it is 25 kilometres long, of moderate difficulty and intended as a day hike. The GR-64 “Vuelta a La Manchuela” passes through the municipality of Mira.
The details of the two routes highlight the difference in scale: two kilometres on the SL-CU 06 compared with a moderate-difficulty, 25-kilometre day hike on the Mira–EnguĂdanos section. In addition to hiking, cycling and walks along the river are among the outdoor activities in Mira. The natural spring Fuente del Rebollo lies along a local trail through the countryside.
For views of the town and its surroundings, the Tres Cruces viewpoint offers a panoramic view of Mira and the surrounding valleys. The Mira Viaduct, also known as the Villa Paz Viaduct, crosses the gorge of the Mira River and offers panoramic views over the valley. The two viewpoints provide different perspectives: one over the town and its valleys, the other over the river gorge.
Church, chapel and viaducts
The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, the Church of the Assumption of Mary, combines artistic styles ranging from the Renaissance to the Baroque. Its single-nave interior has a hall-like layout; the apse is three-sided and has three lunettes. The Ermita de la Piedad is a religious building dating from the 16th century.
Another structure with clearly specified dimensions is the Los Arenales Viaduct, also called La Cortada. It is part of the Cuenca–Valencia railway line and has five arches, each with a span of twelve metres. Including the adjoining retaining walls, it is just under 100 metres long and up to 25 metres high. The birthplace of AntĂłn MartĂn in Mira is associated with the founding of the Hospital de San Juan de Dios in Madrid.
Traditions and cuisine
On every Friday during Lent, after the Stations of the Cross at the church in Mira, the Miserere from Psalm 50 is sung in Latin. The local San Isidro festival includes a procession to the Ermita de la Piedad. A Mass is celebrated there, and the fields are blessed. The festivities in honour of San Roque take place in mid-August and include music, bull runs and centuries-old traditions. On the evening of 16 January, bonfires are lit in the streets of Mira.
Traditional cuisine is also part of the town’s character: gachas and morteruelo are served with aged cheese and wines from La Manchuela. Nature, architecture, local customs and regional dishes come together in Mira—from the river gorges to its buildings and festival traditions.
