Beteta combines a historic old town with striking landscapes such as the Hoz de Beteta gorge. When planning your trip, it is worth considering both: architectural history is reflected in the gate, plaza and church, while gorges, caves and trails offer a range of nature experiences.
Old Town and Architectural History
The Puerta de la Cava is the surviving gate of Beteta’s walled complex; sections of the wall also remain. The Puerta de la Villa has disappeared. From the Puerta de la Cava, Calle Real leads you into the old town. The street is considered the oldest in the municipality and provides a clear reference point for a walking tour of the historic town.
Wooden balconies and arcades define the look of Plaza Mayor, supported by juniper-wood pillars. The square has preserved most of its original buildings and is considered one of the most beautiful squares in the province of Cuenca. A circular route with an audio guide starts here and leads to the municipality’s main sights. Check in advance whether the audio guide is available on site.
The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is a 15th-century Gothic church with three naves. It is also known as the “Catedral de la Sierra.” Inside is a 16th-century baptismal font in the Classical Renaissance style. The Ermita de la Virgen de la Rosa offers a different perspective on religious architectural history: this 17th-century building lies in the Guadiela valley, about two kilometres from the town centre in the direction of Valsalobre.
The Celtiberian hillfort in the Hoz del Alonjero is another historic landmark; it is known as Castillo de los Siete Condes. The area is also home to Molino de Huertavellida, one of the well-preserved mills in Beteta’s particularly scenic areas. An unmarked path leads to the willow plantations, whose distinctive reddish colour is especially noticeable in autumn.
Gorges, Cave and Lagoons
The Hoz de Beteta is a river gorge carved by the Guadiela, with sheer walls, meanders, waterfalls and striking rock formations. The main access to the Hoz de Beteta y Sumidero de Mata Asnos natural monument is from Beteta. Canyoning and climbing are also possible in the gorge; check local access conditions before taking part.
The Lagunas de El Tobar offer a remarkable natural phenomenon: fresh and salt water never mix there, a phenomenon unique in Spain. A designated car park is about 1,000 metres from the water. Factor this distance into your plans and check parking options before setting out.
Cueva de la Ramera has galleries more than 1,400 metres long and large geological formations. Visits are possible only with a specialist guide; confirm this access requirement before your visit. The former Los Altos Hornos de Beteta blast furnace now also serves as a viewpoint: from there, you can look out over El Ojuelo, a small natural lagoon, and the Masegar valley.
Trails and Viewpoints
The PRCU91 Ruta de la Hoz de Tragavivos connects Beteta with a natural viewpoint above the Hoz de Tragavivos. It passes through pine forests to the Muela de las Loberas. The Sendero interpretativo de Muela Pinilla y El Puntal runs almost entirely through woodland and offers panoramic views of Beteta and the valleys of the Guadiela and Masegar.
The route to the Cascadas del Pozo del Pino takes you through a different landscape: it follows the Guadiela through orchards and riverside vegetation to travertine waterfalls. The PRCU90 trail leads from El Tobar via the Muela de San Cristóbal and the Hoz de Alonjero, alongside the Cuervo River; along the way, there are views of the gorge and the Real Balneario de Solán de Cabras. The route descriptions therefore differ both in the landscapes they pass through and in the destinations mentioned.
For a shorter walk, the town description lists a signed route of about 600 metres: it starts at Plaza de la Iglesia and heads towards the old bullring. Check the conditions on each route before setting off.
