Bolaños De Calatrava can be explored through its diverse architectural styles and historical periods: from a fully Baroque noble house and Mudéjar homes to an Arab fortress. The landscape of Campo de Calatrava and a route through olive groves and fields offer a different perspective. Culture, nature and regional cuisine are distinct highlights to choose from for your trip.
Buildings from different periods
Casa de Coca is the only surviving noble house in Bolaños de Calatrava. It dates from the late 18th century and was built entirely in the Baroque style. Details of the house include restored 19th-century wrought-iron grilles and the family’s marble coat of arms above the lintel.
The Casas de la calle Cristo are a group of four homes with shared architectural features. They are Mudéjar; the houses may date from the 16th century and are considered the oldest homes in the town. They represent a different architectural tradition from Casa de Coca. The distinction in dating is important: the noble house is attributed to the late 18th century, while the date when the houses on calle Cristo were built remains uncertain.
Religious buildings also display different styles. The Ermita del Santo Cristo de la Columna has a single-nave layout and a Latin cross-shaped floor plan. Gothic paintings adorn its walls; inside, there are also frescoes and a Baroque altarpiece created by Miguel de Oliveros in 1689. Visits are possible during services. Check the times locally before your visit.
The Iglesia Parroquial de San Felipe y Santiago was built in the 16th century and combines Renaissance and Gothic styles. The Santuario Virgen del Monte comprises two hermitages dedicated to the Virgen del Monte: an older chapel dating from around the 13th century and the present-day temple from the early 20th century. The sanctuary also houses a collection of votive offerings and furnishings associated with the Virgen del Monte.
The Castillo de Doña Berengüela is an Arab fortress with a square floor plan and a five-storey keep. Today, it serves as a museum. Panels with QR codes link to an audio guide in Spanish and English; check access locally before you arrive.
The Casino de la Verja adds a building from the early 20th century to the town’s architectural history. It is Neo-Mudéjar and initially housed the Círculo Agrario e Industrial de Bolaños. It later became the headquarters of other associations and was associated with cultural events.
Volcanic landscapes and the Ruta de los santuarios
Bolaños de Calatrava is part of Campo de Calatrava, one of the most distinctive volcanic regions of the Iberian Peninsula. Rolling hills, eroded craters, vineyards and grain fields shape this landscape, which is of significant geological and ecological value. This complements the town’s architectural history with a landscape perspective on the region.
The Ruta de los santuarios begins next to the Santuario de la Virgen del Monte; the Virgen del Monte is the patron saint of Bolaños de Calatrava. The route is a 15.8-kilometre out-and-back trail through olive groves and farmland. The distance refers to the entire round trip. As route conditions may depend on local maintenance, check the current conditions before setting out.
The Semana Santa of Bolaños de Calatrava is another part of the town’s cultural life. It is part of the Ruta de la Pasión Calatrava, which is recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional. The tourism recognition applies to the route.
Wine and regional cuisine
Bolaños de Calatrava is part of the IGP Berenjenas de Almagro protected geographical indication. This places the town within a regional food designation. Dishes served during the festivities at the Santuario Virgen del Monte include Caldereta de cordero, Revientalobos and Chuletas de cordero.
Bodegas Amancio Menchero offers visits to the winery and vineyards. Visits can be complemented with wine tastings and tailored to individual preferences; wine-tasting courses are also available. These offerings give your stay a distinct focus on wine. Check booking arrangements and availability in advance.
