El Tejo offers several perspectives for a trip: parts of its territory belong to the Oyambre Dunes and the Marisma de Zapedo, the Camino del Norte passes through the town, and Playa de Oyambre can be seen from El Tejo. There is also the Campo Club de Golf Oyambre and the Iglesia de Santa María de El Tejo.

Dunes, Wetland and Beach Views

Part of El Tejo’s territory belongs to the Oyambre Dunes; another part is within the Marisma de Zapedo. This brings two distinct landscape features into view: dunes and wetlands. Playa de Oyambre can also be seen from El Tejo. This viewpoint adds a specific beach vista to the area’s landscape features and provides another point of reference for getting your bearings.

Camino del Norte and Activities

The Camino del Norte stage from Comillas to Unquera passes through El Tejo, the Ría de La Rabia and the Parque Natural de Oyambre. It has a distinctly rural character and a route profile of alternating ascents and descents. If you include the Camino in your plans, you can consider El Tejo one of the places along this stage. Check the current route markings before setting out.

Golf is another specific point of interest in El Tejo: the Campo Club de Golf Oyambre has nine holes and a par of 57. Check the current operating and access conditions before making firm plans to play. This keeps your plans based on the available information about the course, without assuming unverified opening hours or access arrangements.

Oyambre Surf offers two-hour SUP lessons on the waters of the Ría de Oyambre; more experienced participants can also ride waves at sea. Two-hour surf lessons are also available at the beaches of Oyambre and Merón in San Vicente de la Barquera. These lessons are held in small groups grouped by ability level.

Romanesque Architecture and Monastic History

The Iglesia de Santa María de El Tejo stands on the site of a former monastery of the Premonstratensian Order of Saint Norbert. In the 12th century, King Alfonso VIII granted the order property and rights in the area. The church is one of the few surviving examples of Romanesque architecture in the Saja Nansa region. Its significance can therefore be understood in both historical and architectural terms.

The south wall preserves Romanesque corbels beneath the cornice and a window in the late Romanesque style with a chequerboard pattern. Corbels are projecting structural elements beneath a cornice; the window features a geometric design. These specific features add to the church’s regional significance and make its architectural style recognizable in individual details.

Getting to the Church

To reach the Iglesia de Santa María, take the western coastal road CA-131 from Comillas towards San Vicente de la Barquera. At the entrance to the Parque Natural de Oyambre, opposite the marshland of the Ría de La Rabia, turn onto the CA-363, which climbs up to the church. Check the access route locally before travelling.
