If you choose Santander as a destination for a cultural getaway, you can include art, maritime history and coastal scenery in your plans. The city centre is easy to explore on foot thanks to the relatively short distances. To find your bearings, it helps to first decide what interests you most: museums and architecture appeal to different interests than coastal paths or birdwatching. The cultural offerings also range from art and creative development to archaeological finds.

Art and maritime themes

Designed by Renzo Piano, the Centro BotĂn is a space for art and creative development. It has two large exhibition halls and an auditorium with a capacity of 300 people. Architecture and cultural use sit side by side here: the building was designed by a named architect, while its exhibition and event spaces accommodate different forms of cultural activity.

The Museo Marítimo del Cantábrico focuses on the sea. Its maritime exhibition covers more than 3,000 square metres and is divided into four sections: marine life, fishermen and fishing, maritime history, and maritime technology. This structure offers several thematic points of entry rather than limiting maritime history to a single aspect. Those particularly interested in fishing will find a dedicated section, as will visitors who want to focus on marine life or technological developments.

Architecture and city history

The Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was declared a national monument in 1931. The bell tower of the cathedral complex houses the Centro de Interpretación de la Historia de la Ciudad. It presents the history of the buildings and the city, and the top of the bell tower offers panoramic views across Santander. This site therefore combines historical context with a view of the city.

The Centro Arqueológico de la Muralla Medieval preserves a section of Santander’s medieval city wall. The wall was built after the granting of the fuero in 1187. The centre displays ceramics, coins and other objects recovered during the restoration of the site. The structural remains and the finds provide different insights: the wall is a surviving trace of the city’s history, while the objects on display reveal what was found during the restoration.

The Palacio de La Magdalena was the summer residence of Alfonso XIII and Victoria Eugenia. Since 1933, it has been the main venue for the summer courses of the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo (UIMP). The Mercado de La Esperanza offers a different architectural highlight: it is considered an outstanding example of 19th-century iron architecture in Spain.

Coast, nature and regional cuisine

The La Magdalena Peninsula covers 24.5 hectares. A tourist train explores the peninsula and explains its history along the way; check operating details before your trip. Visitors to the peninsula can see seals, sea lions and penguins in an open-air marine enclosure. The destination thus brings together the historical commentary during the ride and the opportunity to observe the animals.

The Senda de Mataleñas passes small beaches, cliffs and parks. For a visit focused on nature, Santander Bay is another option: it is considered a haven for biodiversity and attracts birdwatchers and nature lovers. The coastal route and the bay offer different highlights: the route focuses on landscape features along the way, while the bay is known for its biodiversity and birdwatching.

The history of coastal stays is also part of Santander’s character. From 1847, the Primera de El Sardinero was promoted as suitable for therapeutic sea bathing. Visitors can enjoy fish and seafood in restaurants and taverns. A look at the development of coastal tourism and regional cuisine can therefore complement interests in nature and culture.

If you are looking for a hotel in Santander, first decide which themes you want to shape your stay: museums and architecture, maritime history, coastal paths or wildlife watching.
