San Miguel de Meruelo brings together radio history, church architecture, and a medieval bridge, along with a described route to the RĂo Campiezo. Each topic offers a different perspective: media history at the Museo de la Radio, construction and restoration history at the Iglesia de San Miguel, and bridge building and historic connecting routes at the Puente de Tresojos. These specific traces of culture offer a way to explore the town.

Radio history at the Museo de la Radio

The Museo de la Radio is located on the ground floor of Meruelo Town Hall, Barrio La Maza 1, 39192 San Miguel de Meruelo. Its collection comprises 160 radio receivers from different eras, models, and styles. This variety draws attention to the different devices and their design. A visit to the museum also covers the origins of radio in Spain and the development of radio broadcasts. The history of technology and the history of programming sit side by side: one concerns the receiving devices, the other the medium and its broadcasts. If you plan to visit the museum, check the access conditions beforehand, as they may change.

Iglesia de San Miguel: mention, renovation, and murals

The Iglesia de San Miguel is mentioned as early as 1210 in the Cartulario de Santa María de Puerto. This date refers to a recorded mention of the church, not the date it was built. Another important phase began in 1617, when the church was completely redesigned in the neoclassical style, based on a design by the architect Juan de Naveda. During restoration work in 2004, murals were discovered behind the existing wooden altarpieces in the temple’s three altars. These details represent different chapters in the building’s history: its mention in a historical register, a major later redesign, and a finding made during restoration work. Visitors interested in the church can distinguish between these periods rather than equating the early mention with the later renovation.

The medieval Puente de Tresojos

The Puente de Tresojos is a medieval bridge in San Miguel de Meruelo with three pointed arches. Its design is a specific architectural feature, while its historical classification places it in a particular period. The bridge formed part of historic connecting routes between the region’s settlements and helped link rural roads used for local trade. Its history therefore encompasses not only its construction, but also the role such routes played in local connections and trade. In contrast to the museum and church, the focus here is on the bridge and its place in earlier transport routes.

Route and travel time

One route to San Miguel de Meruelo reaches the town via the CA-452 road. In Barrio de Solorza, the route descends to the RĂo Campiezo, crosses the river over a bridge, and then continues for a few more metres to the Albergue de Meruelo. The route can be understood by following its sequence: the barrio, the descent to the river, the bridge crossing, and the short onward stretch to the stated destination. Check road conditions before driving and, before setting out on foot, check route conditions and available services.

Fiestas Patronales de San Miguel

The Fiestas Patronales de San Miguel offer an extensive programme of activities for all age groups. If you would like to include the celebration in your travel plans, check the event dates in advance and choose your travel dates to coincide with the specific event. The festivities thus complement the cultural topics described above with a possible reason to plan your visit for a particular time.
